This is incorrect...It should be: Why is Germany better than England? If you were going to use are it would be: Why are Germans better than the English? You should try to figure out what you are talking about before you try to correct someone. 🙂

Like you've done 1x in history so far (when it mattered).

I think I've tipped on the subject of English arrogance in sport before...surely I don't have to do it again...

The reason Germany is generally better at football is because they've generally got a more professional method of training children. Like the Dutch (who have 1/6 the population of England and do just as well at most sports). Germany has the same population as the English, but the same methods as the Dutch at gathering and nurturing up and coming talent. So they are better.

football is a funny sport - populations often bear little resemblance to the ability of teams, nor, indeed, does funding. why, for instance, can the pharoh isles get a draw with scotland?

Because they practice taking penalties

West Germany lost the 1976 European Championship final to Czechoslovakia on Penalties, and sine then they haven't missed a single penalty at a major championship .... hence enabling them to win semi's at Italia 90 and Euro '96 against the amateur English... what the England Football team needs is for Johnny Wilkinson to be retrained to hit the ball under the bar rather than over it and put him in the team instead of David Beckham

Actually you're both correct. 'Are' is the correct form of to be for collective nouns in British English, while 'is' is correct in US English.

Arsenal are doing very poorly this season.
