It is possible that yawns are contagious because at one time in evolutionary history, the yawn served to coordinate the social behavior of a group of animals. When one member of the group yawned to signal an event, all the other members of the group also yawned. Yawns may still be contagious these days because of a leftover response (a "vestigial" response) that is not used anymore. None of this has been proven true and yawns are still one of the mysteries of the mind.

The yawn is the a natural response when we need more oxygen.
When we are tired we breathe deeper and more slowly and yawning before we sleep facilitates this.
But sometimes we just yawn to get more oxygen, if this is in a confined space then we take oxygen from other people, who then feel the need to yawn.
Err, umm, is anybody still awake?? **yawn**

mammal babies yawn when over -stimulated by too much sensory input. That is why, when you hold and coo to a baby human, kitten, or puppy, it always yawns in your face!.
nah... it's because when one person opens his/her mouth and sucks in a lot of air, the pressure around him will decrease. To compensate, other people will have to yawn too, as otherwise the pressure in their lungs would be higher than that around them, and they might explode.
.... do you understand now why I keep getting bad grades in physics?

ok i gave you all a chance to explain so i now i will let you you know why. we are higher dimensional creatures but can only sense three dimensions. we are all connected. to use a two dimensional analogy (pretend that we can only sense two dimensions, if you have trouble with that concept, drink vodka until you can see the infrared spectrum). if you bisected the upper limbs of a tree with a plane and look at the plane from above (one dimension higher then the two dimensional plane, you would see disconnected and seemingly unrelated images roughly in the shape of circles representing the cross section of the individual limbs. to a two dimesional being there would be no connection at all; but if we go one dimension higher we can see that the apparent disconnected circles are all part of a three dimensioanl tree. applying this analogy to our world, we are also all connected to some greater whole in higher dimensional space. so if we go to the fourth dimesion (this may require peyote, caution...use only in religious ceremonies) we can now see that we are all one, four dimensional being. since we evolved from amobe which evolved from creatures that could take in energy and relase the bi-product out the other end (common term poop) and do this from either end it follows that we are also bidirectional, thus we were also at some point to take in food from either end. residual taste buds exist at either end which is why hot peppers burn going in or coming out. this proves that we are farting in reverse from our common ancestrial linkage to the amobe and we must do this in unison.
IATMOMPATF and bidirectional single and higher celled animals living in all dimension

I would have to say I think it is entirely in the mind. I used to yawn all the time after other people, but after I heard about their contageousness, I can't say I've done it since.
