"Matthew Emmons is a trained accountant but he got his numbers terribly wrong on Sunday.
The American sharpshooter was just one shot away from a second Olympic gold medal when he fired at the wrong target in the final round.
Gone was the chance of gold - or even silver or bronze.
Emmons, who had dominated the 50-metre rifle three-position target event and is considered the best in the world in his discipline, got a big fat zero and plunged to eighth. "
Who would have picked it? Best in American technology and skills and he shot up an Austrian's target. Any more examples of Olympians living up to national stereotypes?

Originally posted by steerpikeWhat I think is best about this is that he got a bullseye on the Austrian's target, which had to be awarded to the Austrian shooter, who had no bullseyes up until that point and thus propelled him up into bronze 🙂

This story was just too good, so I had to look into it. It was no bull. 😉
"Planer had been in fifth position when he was credited with a final-shot bullseye, his best shot of the finals.
But officials studying replays later determined that Planer had indeed scored a 10.6 on his shot, while Emmons hit an 8.1 on Planer's target."

United States: 25 Gold; 27 Silver; 19 Bronze
New Zealand: 2 Gold...in what? Sheep herding?
Yor turn to shut-up bloodsucker
By the way, according to more than one web site, there were several people credited with "splitting the atom". One of the greatest achievements in the history of scientific endeavour was acknowledged today with the presentation of the Nobel Prize to Italian physicist Enric Fermi, recognised as the first man in history to succeed in splitting the atom".

Let's just say you are correct...in the meantime compare NZ's technological achievements to USA's...like comparing, well, Gold to Bronze...in the spirit of the games eh, Kiwi?

According to this site
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html
the population of the US is 293,027,571.
According to this site
http://www.stats.govt.nz/domino/external/web/prod_serv.nsf/htmldocs/Pop+Clock
the population of New Zealand is only 4,066,045.
That means the US are roughly 72 times larger than New Zealand, population-wise. Since that in turn means they have a larger pool of people to draw their athletes from, I'd expect them to also perform roughly 70 times better than New Zealand.
From THAT perspective, the USA are hopeless underachievers with a mere 25 gold medals.

Oh, 25 is still more than 2, my feathered friend 😉

Unfortunately, AFAIK, sheep are not allowed to participate in the Olympics. Otherwise the Kiwis would kick US ass. :p
25 is indeed more than 2; you're obviously not mathematically challenged. However, it's not 70 times more --as one would expect...

(Personally, I don't think that's something to brag about, but apparently Americans don't seem to be bothered by this.)
