Britain is about as far from a self-confident nation as it's possible to get! We're racked by self-doubt, have no real sense of cultural identity and are profoundly uncertain about our place in the world. Yes we don't do the flag-waving nonsense, thank God, but it's more through a sense of embarassment than an overflowing self assurance.

That said, I think self-mocking is no bad thing. There's no country on earth that doesn't have plenty to be embarassed about.

I agree! My point about 'self confidence' was meant to be ironic - but of course only the british would get that!
