its normaly the family members who put up the protests, if the patient has a (UK) doner card(sp?) then the organs belong to the NHS after death, if no doner card is present then the docs have to ask the family members for the internals. the image of butchery fills their minds they panic and get all protective over a decomposing corpse.
i would like to see organ harvesting compulsery after death, they could do a lot of good.

i would prefer to give my organs up for use when i die, i can understand why people would not like to and religion does come into it, so you cannot make it compulsary.
i myself do not beleive in religion, i find it hard to beleive that there is anything after life.

In Austria you have a opt out option ... If you have religious or other reasons do not give your organs after death, you have to hand in a form and your organs won't be removed ...
I won't hand in my form - because I believe when I am dead my body shall help other people who may need it (although I believe my lungs won't be used again)
