I just got my PC back again, and i'm still getting problems. The graphics card stops working and reconnects stating something about Kernel mode drivers(196.21 stopped responding and restarted) fails...I sent the machine back to the shop, and they found nothing wrong with the card or anything else to do with the hardware...They are claiming compatability issues/bugs between windows 7 and the gtx 295.

I plan to take the machine to another shop for an outside opinion, but is there any history of this thing?

Is it 64 bit? After a little bit of research I found a lot of people are having 64bit issues with graphics drivers windows 7, but no solution. Sorry.

I used to play games on my computer. Now I troll threads at a chess site and play guitar.

have you tried older drivers? the newest ones are often a bit unstable.

The only thing that seems to work is to uninstall 64 bit and reinstall 32 bit.

isn't the 32bit win7 in the same installation disc or box? I thought they were supposed to be shipped together. with vista you needed to order 64bit/32bit separately from MS, but it only cost the postal fees. unless you hade ultimate or business edition, which had both 32&64 together.

I'm quite skeptical about 64+win7 not being a workable setup though, so I'd suspect everything else first. but I don't have win 7 myself, so...

I'm just going by what I've seen on forums etc.

Wormwood is correct. Windows 7 Home Premium; Professional; and Ultimate can all be installed to either 32 or 64 bit right out of the box. The only one that can't install 64 bit is Windows 7 Starter Edition.

Something else you might not know, all retail versions of Windows 7 include all flavours of the operating system, so if you buy Home Premium and want to upgrade to Ultimate later on, you can purchase an upgrade key from Microsoft and use that with your original Home Premium disks to install Ultimate. Pretty cool, eh?

I'd suggest that you try to install the driver using compatibility mode. Here's some instructions that I pulled off the web from 3 seconds of searching for other people having problems with their nVidia drivers:

Remove and rescan that hardware device in Device Manager, right-click on the driver executable/installer file -> Properties and select the Compatibility tab; click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows Vista in the list-down box; then try installing the device driver.

Linux is great... except if you want to play games.
