I've been playing in professional chess tournaments since 1972 [yuppers, guess I'm older than dirt :-) ]
Well, one year I played in the Detroit Open and in round 1 I was paired against this poor f#cked up guy in a wheelchair, whose only enjoyment in life was to play in chess tournaments...
I was a favorite for the tournament because way back then my USCF rating was over 2000 and there weren't many Experts around. HOWEVER, the guy played miserably and after losing a piece and 3 pawns, set up a trap for a perpetual check.
Of course I saw it. But what was going through my mind wasn't the game, or the importance of the game to me... what was going through my mind was what a horrible thing had happened to this ol' guy who was all crippled up and couldn't enjoy the simply things we take for granted every day. What was going through my mind was how important this tournament was to him.
So I took the baited pawn and he got his perpetual check. I had to act surprised cause I was a favorite in the tournament. But meanwhile I felt that I had done something GOOD in the world. MAYBE, just maybe this act of sacrifice was the one thing that would keep me from burning in HELL forever!!!? π²
Well wouldn't you know it... the guy wanted to show off the game to EVERYBODY. π The game even got into the state magazine showing how I fell for the trap. π³
I told my friend (who happened to be a minister) about the event and he told me "NEVER, EVER THROW A GAME!!! They don't respect you anymore AND let me tell you something about chess! When a person sits down at a chessboard across from you, THEY DON'T WANT MERCY! THEY WANT TO BEAT YOU OR BE BEATEN! And if you don't play up to your level of ability - well then you are scum to them. Stomp the livin' daylights outta them! You have an OBLIGATION to do that!"
Heh, Rev Lindell Brady. Great guy.
I've never thrown a game since...

Oh yes, also to show people how much he's generous because he let draw a game to a disabled opponent.
Lame.

You are so far off base that you don't make any sense anymore.
Don't you know by now that I'm an accomplished writer and chess player? That I am a free lance writer for Chess LIfe? That I was the Editor of Michigan Chess Magazine for years!? That I was the Games Editor for the state magazine back in the 80's?
I tried to share a sentimental story - and you want to take away it's value.

I was this ,I was that,I did this,I did that.......
If there was a funeral you would claim to be the dead one just to seek attention.

I just thought it was a dumb thing to do, and found it excruciating to read knowing what he was going to do. People with disabilities don't need or want special treatment. Making him feel better now isn't going to help him. And the last thing he wants is your pity.
....i liked the story....i have no complaints ( can i have a free subscription to something now )...

Would you consider mud wrestling against abjenood?
My money would be on you... and I like camels also π

Of course, and I'd kick his @ss. I'm 6' 0" and 155. I'm not huge, but he looks pretty small. That's not to mention my years of mud wrestling instruction in the Himalayans.
I actually hate camels. They make me jealous.
