Equality, indeed. But the theme of the exchange is not advantage so much as it is taking a player out of his prefered game. The Winower, Advance, Tarrasch...have a lot of central traffic to navigate through. French players typically know the pawn breaks and the angles needed to keep pressure on White's pawn chain...The exchange takes the typical French game out of the mix and immediately puts the French player into a relatively foreign line...No traffic, wide open. Yes its even...but is it?

The exchange solves the most dreaded problem for the French defense player: The bad bishop. Sure... It is nothing like the Winawer, Tarrasch, Advance, etc. but foreign to the French player?
