My apologies if this topic has been covered before...

How does someone become a master, and then how does someone proceed to become a grandmaster?

For FIDE master you need a required rating of 2300 from FIDE rated games.

International Master you need a rating of 2400 and a norm of 2450

Grand Masters need 2500 and a number of norms, im not sure how many, but they have to be against high rated opponents.

You also get country masters, the requirments for these vary, im sure in Denmark you only need a rating of 1900 and then you are an instant master.

Thank you Grayeyesofsorrow.

Would anybody know if there are any masters on this site?

yes, there are masters on this site. But they don't all like the publicity, so I won't give away their names, only jorquerino. It is known about him.

Both IM and GM needs 3 norms and the rating mentioned above (2400 and 2500) at least one time. The norms can only be achieved when playing at least 9 rounds against at least 3 title holders and at least play against 3 different nationalities. See http://fide.com/official/handbook.asp?level=b0101 for a detailed description.

I think a lot of people have the rating to get FM or CF Master title but dont, since in both cases you have to pay. Well at least for the BCF and FM you do :-)

I've never heard of the CF or BCF title, and I've never heard that you have to pay to get the FM title.

If I had to guess I'd say BCF was British Chess Federation and CF was just Chess Federation. They would give out the National Master titles.

Don't know about the british title, but if you want FIDE MASTER next to your name,it'll cost you 50$(approx.),and the needed rating,of course 🙂

In the US, if you achieve a rating of 2200 USCF you are automatically a NM!

It cost about £100 a few years ago, when I was offered the title. I didn't think it was worth that much money, so declined.

The amount will vary, depending on where you live. The British Chess Federation (BCF) probably grabs most of the £100 for "administration costs" and what's left goes to that hopelessly corrupt organisation, known as FIDE.
