Nyxie wonders....

if you place the king next to the knight (not diagonal) the knight will never be able to check the king on the next move.

Two squares away on the diagonal is the best. It takes the knight 4 moves before it can attack the king again.

I don't think they or you or other people do get my point. Both of these "players" currently have their clan shields up so they will be, in all probability, playing in the clan leagues where opponents will have no opportunity to "blacklist" them. Woodley's rating is up to 1665; tlai 1992 after resigning a bunch of games to deliberately drop his rating down to maximize the damage he is doing ratings wise to his honest opponents, is now back to routinely beating players 300+ better than his September rating. Either A) They have found a way to quickly master a number of difficult chess strategies or B) They are cheaters. If A they should be willing to share some of this knowledge with other players as many people do in this forum in a totally unselfish way to help others improve their game so everybody benefits from better played games. If B they should be punished by the site or if not, they should be "blacklisted". I submit that either one of these individuals wouldn't be able to answer any of those questions on their own and if they had a book in front of them wouldn't be able to answer direst, related follow up questions. So, I'll "drop it" when they show me A Is true or if action is taken to correct B.

EDIT: Tlai1992 has entered his Chess Clan in the 3/7, 7/14 and 14/28; apparently with his ability to rapidly calculate tactics 54 games are no problem to him. Also because of his ratings gamesmanship, "he" will be playing 2nd board. If his team makes it into the highest division (which is doubtful), at present I would have to play "him". If, as is more likely, he plays in a lower division, "he" will be playing 1300's or 1400's. If nothing is done, it's entirely possible "he" may go unbeaten in one or more of these leagues.

I respect what you are saying, #1, but I don't really think it is worth worrying about. Its sad that some people don't have it in them to play fairly, but given that he can't be prevented from doing it...I think you have done all you can. You made the point. As far as tournaments go, I think people anyone will give his clan any credit for anything they win on his alleged skills. People know the real truth...

No1,you're totally right and you know that I agree with you on this issue 100%.
It's unbelievable how people here doesn't care and doesn't realize that players like JW or Tlai1992 can spoil the fun in the oh-so-many-times-asked Clan Leagues.
Even Russ doesn't give a **** about them so I guess that our words and effort to warn human players here is totally useless.

I say that if I'll have to face JW or Tlai1992 I'll download some chess engine and will use it against them.

As many zealots said ,''Prove the fact that I'm using an engine, and even if you'll prove it admins won't do nothing'' HAHA!

EDIT
Oh yeah and i'm sure Jw is not using chess aid!

Although I like Feivel's answers a lot and would have preferred our two chess prodigies to answer the quiz, as a public service I will attempt to answer the questions. I am doing this without looking in any books, so if I get any wrong in part, other feel free to correct me or disagree. Here goes:

1. Explain what a weak square is and how it should be exploited.

A: A "weak square" is a square which cannot be controlled by a pawn as the adjoining pawns have either been captured or advanced to the same rank. For example, commonly in some Sicilian lines Black exchanges his c-pawn and advances his e-pawn to e5; therefore, the square d5 is "weak". To exploit a weak square, the opponent should try to occupy it with either a Knight (usually preferable) or a Bishop; this is particulary important when the weak square is a center square in as in the above example, as your Knight or Bishop will have a dominating position controlling a maximum amount of squares.

2. Explain why having the Bishop pair is considered an advantage and how the Bishop pair should be used for maximum effect.

A: The Bishop is a long range piece which can control squares on both sides of the board; however, a single Bishop can only ever control the squares of its color. A Knight, by contrast, can only control squares at a short range but it can eventually control any square in that range. However, when you have both your Bishops and your opponent does not, the disadvantage above is eliminated; your Bishops can control every square. In the great majority of positions, the ability of the Bishops to threaten simultenously on both wings is a tangible advantage (the exception being where the position is closed because of pawn position). To utilize this adavantage the optimum position of the Bishops will be side by side in the center of the board or on the long diagonals (the diagonals containing 7 or 8 squares);

3. Explain the concept of the "absolute seventh" and why it is an almost certain winning advantage in an endgame.

A; In any game, getting one of your rooks to your opponents rank where the pawn initially start is an important goal; from there it will usually attack several pawns which your opponent must defend and defending in the long run in chess is a losing strategy. This is called getting a "Rook to the seventh" in chess terminology (though technically Black would be getting his Rook to the "second&quot😉. The "absolute seventh" is where not only is your Rook on the seventh, but your opponent's King is trapped on the back rank. Thus, the King cannot defend his own pawns that are not on the seventh or attack your pawns; while your King can be moved to attack his pawns. This lack of King mobility is usually fatal in an endgame where there are more than a few pawns on the board:

4. Explain the concept of a backward pawn, the half-open file and what strategy one should use when an opponent has a backward pawn on a half-open file.

A: A backward pawn is similar to a weak square; it is a pawn whose adjoining pawns have been advanced or captured so that the pawn must be defended by pieces, not other pawns. A half-open file is one where either Black or White's pawn has been captured or has moved to an adjacent file by capturing, so that only one side's pawn(s) remain. Where an opponent has a backward pawn on a half-open file, the strategy is to first "fix" its position by moving your pawns on the adjoining files to squares where the backward pawn cannot be advanced without its loss and then attacking the pawn down the file with Rook(s) and piling on it with a Bishop and Knight(s); the pawn will either fall or you will restrict your opponent's mobility so you can threaten in other areas;

5. Explain and discuss where a Knight should be ideally deployed for maximum effect and where on the board a Knight is at it's weakest under normal conditions.

A: This is the easiest; a piece should ideally be deployed where it is the most mobile i.e. can be moved to the most squares. A Knight in the center of the board can reach 8 squares; whereas a Knight in a corner square can hit only 2. Always try to deploy your Knights in the center to maximize their mobility and effectiveness.

These, are of course, general principles they are subject to tactical positions and exceptional circumstances, but I think they are worthy of knowing. Anyone who wishes to elcuidate on these principles, point out any screw ups or suggest exceptions to them, please feel free to do so. I would again invite Tlai1992 and JW to discuss Chess Strategy, but I suspect they would have little to say.

EDIT: Please excuse the spelling errors, but it's a long post and I'm too lazy to go back and correct em all.

Hey, thanks for answering after all! I love this site! I guess it's time I buy my wings, eh? OK.

Mr. Marauder, do you have a chess book you would suggest? I myself am rated these days
at about 1400 and I'd love to get better. I bought Maurice Ashley's CDRom (after I has a chance
to play him on a local college campus), but mostly that CD is fairly basic. You mention books
in your post and programs in your profile. Any more specific advice would be appreciated!

I think other players would be better to suggest books; I learned to play a long time ago and I love the books I have, but they're not very modern. The two newer books I brought a few months ago and which are helpful, although advanced, are Modern Chess Opening (14th Edition) by Nick DeFirmian, which covers pretty much the moves of every opening you're likely to see but there are better books on the strategy of the opening: and Basic Chess Endings by Reuben Fine which I think is an excellent guide to endgame strategy and basic positions. There have been other threads here covering the best books for players who are at an intermediate level like yours; hopefully somebody can pull up the links as my computer literacy ain't much. Good luck with your games!

i suspect no.1 that ppl on this site are pondering on how you deal with what you call "the woodley attack", i guess that others are contemplating other options before answering.

A good defense against the ''Woodley attack'' is explained in my previous post here.

I just checked out Tlai1992's chart. He beat Quirine (previously of the top 20 before leaving for a while...) and he beat him in 20 odd moves! This from a guy who struggled to get in the top 1000 just a few months ago? I know see why no1M is on such a witch hunt!

Game 771372

EDIT: Having looked at this game Quirine did ask for it.

no witch hunt, no.1 is trying to establish what special techniques both players have deployed in the rise through the ratings.

the woodley attack seems perfectly effective!

Well, let's not overlook JamesMaster Woodley's accomplishments: he recently defeated Nallapuh, a high 1700's player and both Lucifershammer and Ourbouros, players of approximately 1600+ ability. So "his" improvement is almost as impressive as Tlai's in its own way.
