i have been contemplating buying some books to enhance my chess skills for some time, but i heard this thread would begin in the forums, so i decided to wait.
i am now considering investing in a chess engine for practice purposes only.
having read the last few posts this has led me to ask the following questions;
(1) does this assist me in countering the world famous woodley attack?
(2) does using an engine for practice purposes only, help me boost my ratings?
(3) if during practice purposes only, would an engine recognise that a players ability is such that it would recommend i resign? for example if i was player j against opponent t, would it tell me that player t was so good that it recommends i resign.
i would be extremely grateful if ppl could assist in these important questions.
thanks
chris

You'd better ask Kasparov 😉

Hmm, depends how you use it. One thing you could try is playing a game, once you've lost, get the computer to analyse it. It will suggest 'better' moves, generally speaking it will do this in the places were you've made a mistake, though sometimes your mistakes won't result in the loss of a piece or check mate, rather they will be positional or stategic mistakes. The computer can't really spot these mistakes, it will just evaluate whether a capture will result from the move. This is why humans can still beat computers. It is also why strong human players can tell when their playing a computer 😉

No it wouldn't. It would just play on until mate. The way a computer chooses a move is it looks at all the possibilities and equates a numerical 'value' to each move (or rather line, as the computer will look ahead a certain number of moves, normally about 10 to 14). Im sure you must have heard the 'value' of each piece, queen=9 pawns, rook=5p, bishop=3p, Knight=2.5pawns etc..., well the computer will give a value to each line based on the resulting captures. ie, if one move leads to the capture of a rook, that line will have a score of 5. If that line has the highest numerical value, that will be the line the computer plays.

No1 why dont you and your buddy boy Grayeyes stop wasting your time, Try going after some B's, anyone can catch A's, i could catch A's in my sleep.

If people can has blatantly and obviously cheat as these individuals and absolutely nothing is done about it, what would be the point of trying to prove other people were cheating? No one, NO ONE, who honestly looks at the facts can deny that Tlai and JW are cheating; yet they'll soon be firing up their engines from turn one on in the clan leagues!! If people insist that something be done about obvious cheats, maybe, just maybe, we can do something about not obvious cheats, but if obvious cheating is going to be OK the war's over.

Or any of the questions here. My question while not as profound had great meaning for me. I believe the answer to it could help my game immensely.

In fairness, there are less encounters between these two than myself and Cheshire cat but it is alarming to see the results. How did Thai end up playing James in a clan match when he states that his clan only accept fair challenges? More to the point, how did he then go on and win them both, when out rated by 300 points?? 1300 odd player beats 1600 player twice in a clan match up, i'd like to see the day that's repeated without timouts involved!
