Originally posted by Northern Ladhave you had any thoughts on using the reti against some of the stronger French CC players here? Seems like it may break apart some of those long 7 pawn chains that a certain strong player seems to find himself with.
Don't think it was that unusual; we both had three pawn islands, double rooks and opposite-coloured bishops.
Just curious as to if its under consideration.

I have indeed played it (against the Caro that is) OTB, indeed against a GM, who made absolutely no attempt to refute it. He just ground me down in a long equal endgame. British players may be able to guess who the GM in question was!
After e4 e6. b3 d5. bb2 nf6. nc6 instead of c5 why not d5 forcing the white night back to e2 or even b5? This seems a solid way for black to turn the tables back on white by forcing white to smother themselves.........imho
of course black would follow with e4 taking control of the center.....

That was an excellent review. I'm impressed... so impressed that I also ordered the book!
Actually I have his King's Gambit book and think he's a brilliant author, so this should also be good.
Wow!! 228 pages chock-full of analysis & virtually all of it is Johansson's own, purely because of a lack of previous material.
🙂
Originally posted by SquelchbelchI tried out the reti in some blitz games at club and won them both. Unfortunately they were against a improving, but still mostly inferior player (can't win the "won games" yet, lets me slime my way out of them). I rather like it better than the 3. Nc3 I've been playing.

Pros to the Reti: Fun, unusual line, straightforward ideas.
Cons: No chance to play Alekhine-Chatard which is my favorite line against the french (I don't like playing against the winawer so this really isn't a big loss)
