As Karpov would tell you sometimes your potential can be forever retarded by someone just a little better.

I think we now agree, and I certainly subscribe to your theory that it is 'likely' that current World Champions would outshine past World Champions, based on our cumulative knowledge theory. Kasparov has Capablancas talent, with a century's ...[text shortened]... fter all 12 move sacrificial combinations are hard to come by against the likes of Karpov!
I think we're going to have to agree to agree at this point. 😵

Kasparov. It has to be.

You have to take into account who was/is the best player of his age & also that theory is being refined constantly.

My favourite player is Morphy, also probably the strongest of his era until Steinitz took over, but if you magicked him up to play against Kasparov he'd undoubtedly lose & probably quite badly because of Kasparov's vast theoretical knowledge & balanced attacking/defensive play.

I think Fisher would be the strongest challenger to Kasparov's title as best chess player ever, but we will never know since Bobby went ga-ga.

Theoretical knowledge and opening theory be damned, Morphy was the man.

I am. Have a draw against Reshevsky. OK, so it was only a correspondence game, but I'm still undefeated vs. GM's.
