I have been fairly successful with queens gambit against the french but not always. the following is not queens gambit but a typical white opening to try and control the center.well theoretically you wouldnt know they were playing the french until move 3 or 4 lets say 1.e4 2. Nc3 3. Nf3 assuming they follow the first 3 moves of the french defense to the letter what comes next for white.
Well,I do fear the french. My record against it is terrible :'(
OTB I've tried everything,Tarrasch,Winawer,exchange,KIA,advance,Millner-Barry,you name it.I now stick to the advance or Millner-Barry gambit, when I'm in a daring mood, for OTB.Here it can be anything.
Personally,I believe the Tarrasch or the KIA are the best to meet the French, but it's so darn hard to play the Tarrasch well and the KIA doesn't really fit my style.
Sir Lot.

at all costs avoid the kings gambit when combating the french it is not pretty at least it never works for me
Originally posted by deathbypawnAn idea against the main line of the French i.e. 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 Nf6 is the Alekhine-Chatard attack which goes 4 Bg5 Be7 5 e5 Nfd7 6 h4 sacking a pawn for an open h file and your Queen usually getting to g4. Black does not have to accept, however, and can play 6 ...... c5. Either way, there are tactical opportunities for each side.
I was wondering what peoples prefered offense was when facing the difficult to beat french defense.
Against the Winawer, where Black plays 3 ..... Bb5 the most aggressive plan is called, I believe, the Gledhill, which continues 4 e5 c5 5 Qg4. Again, it's tricky and tactical but that sounds like what you're looking for.
The books I have consider 3 e4xd4 an "invitation to a draw" so I don't think that's what you have in mind.

I could beat any player on this site from the white side of the French, (Excluding those in the top 1000 of course)
🙂
