If RHP said that people could use computers to select moves and not tell opponents, RHP would promptly be out of business. As someone has already said, most of the better players already have computer programs and can play them to their heart's content. At RHP they want to play humans (with all their flaws). I don't think there's a correspondence site that allows surreptitious computer use. There are sites, however, that allow computers and they advertise themselves as such. People who like to play computers and can't afford their own (even tho the cheapest now can beat most people) can go on those sites and get their brains beat out by nitwits who can barely download software. I don't see the point myself, but it's a matter of taste...

We put a lot of effort into these games, spread out over a month there is the research, working out variations and so on. If someone is going to beat me I want them to have worked harder than I did - or at least just be plain better at the game. I don't want to put in all that effort to have some dope with an engine win.

but isnt the point of playing that game out over a month to get better? I'm not trying to say cheating is ok, not at all. But playing on an online sight is for fun and to get better. The rhp ratings mean nothing, there is no money on the table, and there is little to no recognition. Granite it is against the rules of the sight so i guess something must ...[text shortened]... If anything the next time I play a "person" who will make mistakes I will be that much better.

I have heard a lot of talk here aout IM and his engine, and him being expelled from the site because if it, but has anyone heard IM's point of view? Did he get the chance to defend the charge publicly?

Originally posted by newdad27I too wonder what's "in it" for a person who's cheating. Cheating is as cheating does. Some people have such low self esteem -- probably to match their lack of skill -- and cheating gives them a sense of accomplishment. But, as we all know, it's NOT an accomplishment to win by cheating. So why do it?
In regards to the use of chess engines and im31 what exactley would be "in it" for im31 to sit around for hours beating unsuspecting players by using a chess engine in hundreds of games?
As for "why does it bother us" -- because for those who are not cheating there is a real since of accomplishment by matching wits with a human and prevailing....whether it's a single game, a clan match or a tournament.
If we "just wanted to play chess" -- we'd play Fritz ourselves.
