I agree that chess is worthy of greater stature than it gets however I don't think it should become a sport to try gain this. Chess should stay where it is and continue to evolve.

Have just discovered a recent scientific paper, where chess was chosen as the ultimate sport. IT WAS JUDGED THAT ULTIMATELY ALL SPORT CAME DOWN TO SPIRIT. CHESS WAS FIRST boxing was second and Marathon running came a close third.
On this principle it was judged that all sports came down that if people were even matched it was always the one with the most thought and will that became the winner and this was shown ultimately that chess was the best way of expressing this.
