This is one of those things I still have problems with. I think I have a fairly good sense of the game, but I still drop stuff occasionally. It's a habit that comes from speed chess I think...I see a move, and I MOVE.
I have stopped doing this so much since I came here. It's a simple trick that's becoming part of my little ritual that happens when I move. I see a move I like, and my next response is to - without touching the piece - look at each of my opponent's pieces and Pawns to see if any of them can grab something of mine en prise. I've been avoiding a surprising number of blunders this way. The only piece I've dropped here at RHP was intended to be a sacrifice - I knew it could die without getting taken back - but I miscalculated the resulting tactical combination. This bothers me way less than dropping something totally en prise.
Try it! A lot of people claim to have this problem. It's very frustrating.
Yes, I definately have this problem. I am good with blitz games, but on here I makes moves far too fast. Although the site is pushing me into the right direction of slowing down and thinking. I still do make some moves too quickly which destroys my chances, but I am getting there. 🙂
Here is the classic example (move 25 I hanged my Queen, stupidly thinking that I was making a mating move): Game 712000
I believe I would have had a won game otherwise, because leading up to that I was chasing the king all over the place.
lol, oh boy do I drop pieces............just back from a club game anyway 14 moves in and im kicking the guy, hes gone pawn grabbing at the start and now my open G file is totally knocking his king about. Now he plays Ne5 attacking my queen on e7, i see this, i know this, i totally know i have to move the queen or take the knight. My brain goes off for a walk, when it comes back it play 0-0-0, he took my queen with check and then took my rook on the G file. I still went on to win this game (thank god for unfair match ups :-D ), but I shall never know why after seeing he'd take my queen i went 0-0-0. Mental block ?! Anyone else do this, or am I the only one ? :-)

Here's a problem I've had. I leave my knight to be exchanged. the opponent bishop takes the knight. I forget the exchange a few days later and all I see is a bishop sitting on a square, but not that it's taken my knight. So I just make a positional move and leave the bishop there. Then a move later I count the pieces and see I'm a piece short. My opponent just took my knight for nothing! Needless to say I promptly resigned in disgust.

Even worse is the wrong recapture problem here. I'll sit for several minutes calculating some tactical line, conclude that I need to recapture with piece A, where I have quite a good position, instead of piece B, which loses on the spot.
A couple moves later, it's time to make the recapture. I glance over the board, think "forced recapture" and click-click, I've just recaptured with piece B.

I remember one game in particular ... I'd just offered a rook trade which was accepted. A day later I look at the board and just got myself worked up over it. His rook was SO strongly positioned - *HOW* could I have let it get there ... *HOW* was I going to protect each of the pawns it was now attacking.
I made two or three different moves, each time (thankfully) just closing the window instead of comitting the move.
The next day, I came back and realized PxR was waiting for me all along ...

I just did worse. Instead of dropping a piece I drop the game.
