Game 1211942

Would people please stop falling for this one?

Neat. I never see this, because I usually play e4 instead of e3. Does black have any way to hold the pawn at all that is playable, even by a masochist?

Not via 3. b5 they don't.

3. b5 4. a4 bxa4 5. Rxa4 and the c pawn is attacked twice with no defenders.

3. b5 4. a4 a6 5. axb5 and the a6 pawn is pinned to the a8 rook.

3. b5 4. a4 Ba6 (Bd7) 5. axb5 Bxb5 6. Nc3 c6 (Ba6 leads to Qf3) 7. b3 and varying lines (e6, cxb3) all leading to losing a pawn or more.

3. b5 4. a4 Qd7 5. axb5 Qxb5 6. Nc3 Qb3 7. Qxb3 cxb3 8. Bc4 and again it falls.

So what _is_ the magic move for black? It can't be 3 ... Be6? Or can it?

Did a search and found these recent games that did 3. ..Be6 where Black won.

Meduna,E-Zurek,M 2003
Alberti,A-Drazic,S 2003
Szeberenyi,A-Varga,Zo 2000
Buss,R-Rausis,I 1999
Dunnington,A-Zilberman,Y 1999

Position stats for games 1991 onwards are:

White won: 52%
Black won: 29%
Draw: 19%

No kidding. THAT ugly move is playable, is it? I'll have to do a bit of studying. Thanks!

If you think a score of under 40% is 'playable' for black, then yes, by all means, do some studying.

Hey, I don't play the QGA (except by accident, once, when I wasn't paying attention and got there by transposition). But I do have the QGA played against me, and I need to know what to do. Until now, I've been getting by by letting black keep the pawn while I rapidly develop.

Here's a common mistake i see weak players make a lot. If you are playting white...

e4 ..e5
Nf3 ..f6??
Nxe5! ..fxe5
Qh5+ ..g6 (moving the king doesn't help either...)
Qxe5 ..(Whatever you like here)
Qxh8

Nice way to win material, it will only work once though 😉

I think fxe5 is more worthy of the ?? Qe7 has been played against Fischer for a draw.

Let's just compromise and give one question mark to each move.
