i spent 5 days looking at a move, i wasn't sure between move a or move b so i though i would look at it a few times and see what possibilities could arise from each move. last night a decided that move a was probably more sound against the quality of opposition, a lesser player i might have tried move b opening the game up. so i lg in today, mess about on the forums for a little while when check out the game, as soon as i looked at the game i saw a movie c, the most obvious force king rook fork you're ever going to see, now my question is why the pluck did i not see it before?

My problem is much more that I ponder about moves which will give me a small advanteg, go to the game and see a genial move, perform it and see why I imidiately rejected it when I first analysed the game....

Ai caramba!

it's pretty simple trev, you just weren't looking for a move like that. I expect you to be looking for a less forcing move, or a move on the oposite side of the board or perhaps for a move with other pieces.

Anyhow, to avoid missing this stuff do as I do:
1st: look at all candidate moves
2nd: decide what the advantages of each move are: decide wich one is best
3rd: look again at the possible moves, with a whole new perspective, think about the main weaknessess of your oponent (and your one) position.
4th: consider new moves based on the ideias above and the problems associated with the first moves you analysed
5th: decide what your best move is and play it.

To put it more simply, before sending each move look at all forcing moves, yours and your oponents. Look at the tactics and not only at the ideias and the stratagey. Its combining these and aplying them at the correct moments that makes the great player.

Hi

Just out of curiousity I looked at your games to see if I could
the Knight fork. Was it in this game. Game 6678656

Here is the final position - you were Black. (what were you doing?)

You can mate with three Knights, though I've seen a book
that said you cannot.

"You cannot checkmate with two Knights, you cannot even checkmate
with three Knights." I can remember the line but cannot remember
the book.

The three Knights reminded me of a position I was sent ages ago.

Here it is - put this into a box play 1...Nf6+ and Fritz10 does
recognise that 2.Kxh1 2Nf7 is mate. It thinks 2.Kh1 is a draw.
Then you make it play Kxh1 and it sees mate in one.

I've not tested it on other computers.

i don't mean 5 whole days looking at the game, that would be quite sad. i mean taking a few mins to look it over each day, over the 5 days i probably spent 20 min in total looking at the game. i would rather do that than waste those minutes watching tv or some such.

It is quite normal that all sorts of things evade your mind, even if they seem obvious afterwards.

Can do it forcing Black to take one of the Knights?
