This, of course, is complete claptrap and you forgot the smiley.

Oh, yes. I almost forgot to mention that Fischer is dead, and New in Chess statistics long ago revealed that 1.d4 is "best by test." Of course, it is the Sicilian, rather than the French, that accounts mostly for the failure of 1.e4.
Originally posted by c guy1The Alekhine needs a good hand to be played well, you get pressed hard by a good player and you need superb positional understanding to not het squeezed hard. I would start with general open/semi open games against e5, only after getting to grips with those openings play something like the alekhine.
back on track...try the Alekhine
1.e4 Nf6
it's not as accepted as the sicilian...but it's solid...just risky

The French always gave me more trouble than any other defense to 1. e4. I finally started playing something I never thought I would, namely, the Tarrasch Variation 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2. Black can exchange 3...dxe4, but he can also do that after 3. Nc3. The Tarrasch may be the answer to my quest.
I might add that the Sicilian doesn't bother me as much as the French, probably because against 1.e4 I play the Sicilian about 95% of the time. So there seems to be a lot to the idea of learning how to play against an opening by playing that very opening yourself.
