Originally posted by jbacaESPN, are you kidding? In Libya?? There's only one reason why the event took place in Libya. Khadaffi. Who else but a dictator could swing enough cash FIDE's way? Can you imagine Bush raising the million bucks for this event? Even the net doesn't explore all the possibilities. For once they have a webcam covering the players so you can actually see them make the moves and watch the board at the same time over ICC or playchess.com, albeit they're using a cheap camera that freezes up every few seconds. Chessfm should be covering it live, but they're not. It's not just FIDE that's a mess, the presentation sucks. Sorry to be so negative. The match itself is great, real fighting chess, so i can't complain about quality of play.
Then we wonder why Fishcher complained in 72'chess needs more not less promotion, How about someone like Howard Cosell-just kidding
but still....players should exercise their power to influence the way things run in Fide. Without top rated players what do you have....
This whole process should be perceived as exciting on the surface for those unfamiliar wit ...[text shortened]... t chess to be played in Athens this summer this should be leading that!
Off the Soapbox for now

We have a new FIDE World Champion.
FIDE WORLD CHESS CHAMPION 2004 Kasimdzhanov, Rustam (UZB)
Check out ALL the Champion's games played during this championship. Included the Rapid and Blitz games played in each round, if necessary.

Ok, I'm missing something here... So, why are people talking about him now going on to play Kasparov? Was this agreed somewhere? I thought Kasparov has been giving the finger to FIDE for the past decade. And where does Kramnik fit into all this?
Just about all we need now is Fisher to come back and start claiming stuff...
Here's the way i understand it: Rustam Kasimdzhanov is the new FIDE World Champion, after beating Michael Adams. Kasim will now have to play Kasparov in a match. The winner of that match will play the winner of a Kramnik--Leko match. To produce a unified champion. At least that's the plan. As you said, a lot of grandmasters don't like Kasparov getting a "free pass" after arranging his own championship with Kramnik (Brain Games), which incidentally he lost in 2000. FIDE is a rotten, inefficient chess government, but it beats a lot of grandmasters running around arranging their own world championships, ala World Wrestling, and everybody up to their eyeballs in court suits. All the chess community wants is to know who is the best world-wide, and a regular, fair way of deciding it.
Originally posted by buddy2I think you have got it right. The problem is that there is no way to compel Kasparov, Kramnik and Leko to participate. There is a long way to go yet.

As for FIDE, well you only need to read the regulations organisers of these tournaments must observe:-
FIDE officials to be provide with first class air travel, first class hotel ( a suite for the president) etc. whilst the players, who are after all the most important people in all this, have to fund their own travel and hotel arrangements as well as paying an entry fee. It is understandable that Kasparov went off to do his own thing.
Originally posted by collemanI believe that Kasparov takes good share of responsibility for all of this. When he "went off", FIDE was obviously far from perfect, but probably not as terrible as now. All Kasparov's attempts to create alternatives failed mostly due to his personal qualities. And now, when he wants his title back, he promptly forgot all his criticism and came for it to Kirsan. Very nice!

With all respect to Kasimdjanov, it does not look like he has great chances against Kasparov. But without Anand, Morozevich, Svidler and many other strong players, this Libyan qualification does not really prove anything.

Ivanchuk
Grischuk
Topalov
Adams
That's enough to have earned him a shot at Kasparov - he probably wouldn't have had a harder field if any of the rest of the top 10 had been involved. It's not often the winner of a tournament like this beats ALL of the top 4 seeds (or the rest of the top 4 seeds).
I'm bored of the whole WC thing I think - this was an interesting tournament, we should have one every year and treat it the same was as a grand slam in tennis, or Major in Golf. Then Linares and Corus, and who really needs a world championship?
