no but seriously... if black plays well he can get equality and maybe even an advantage. The biggest problem is that if you play the kings gambit you want a sharp game and black can even take that away while at least getting equality. I read that the vienna is just an improved kings gambit that avoids the 2 ...d5 line by black and you can still get a sharp game!!!
But then again. a friend of mine who is a master plays the kings gambitπŸ™‚

The soundness or unsoundness of a opening is done at the GM level. Try playing the stronger players in here wiith that opening. P.S. The French Defense lives at the GM level. Sorry I just had to say that.

I looked at the first 7 moves in the game, and I said, "forget about it". Your opponent moved his queen around for 6 out of those 7 moves. ANY opening would beat an opponent that does that, you won because your opponent sucked, not because the KG is a brilliant opening.

well, yea, but a bunch of those queen moves were forced after the initial early queen development error.

Besides, suppose one's opponent develops the queen a little early in the ruy? Or in the italian? Or, god forbid, in the semi-slav? Will the punishment be so immediate or violent? Nope!

The KG is perfectly sound.

It's the people who play it that are warped πŸ™„

Ever heard of the quote, "tis the nature of the beast".

Basicly, the KG is a beast, you do one mistake, you're dead, checkmated in 20 moves at most, but the same applies to both sides. This is a well known fact, which is why I don't recommend the opening for players under 1500 rating, this opening is best left for the likes of ppl like Spassky. Your opponent did an early mistake in the KG, and lost, if you did an early mistake, you would of lost, it's how it goes. I have proof of this happening Paul, because most of your threads about your games are either, "look howe the KG domolished this dude", or a game were you lose a peice the first 10 moves and go, "where did I go wrong?"

Openings like the Ruy however, despite being boring, at least give you some flexibility to do a few mistakes, which is more newbie friendly, then say a King's Gambit, were if you do one thing slightly wrong the first few moves, your toast. It's an opening that puts your opponent in jeapordy, but puts yourself in jeapordy aswell.

Tis the nature of the beast.

Most of the latter, I'm afraid, are as black -- hence my extended search to find a black opening I can live with against e4.

Nonetheless, I agree that's the nature of the beast. That doesn't make the opening unsound, just dangerous!

Besides, paul wouldn't be paul if he weren't trying to leash a vicious beast! πŸ™‚
