Because, as of now at least, the Japanese economy is stronger than the Chinese economy (not for long, perhaps, but as of now). I know the Chinese economy has been experiencing double digit annual growth for a long time now, but it had so long to go that it hasn't caught the Japanese economy yet (though it might one day not too far into the future).

Therefor ...[text shortened]... ess than other Asian food staples, such as fish, Chinese people would naturally eat more of it.
Or, since he didn't use the term "per capita", it could be because there are simply many more Chinese on the Earth than Japanese. (I'm still thinking this might be a lead-in to some hokey joke, though.) Anyway, enough of this well-meaning but transparent attempt at hijacking the topic. 😵 It's much more fun to discuss the merits or demerits of the three position repetition rule. (OK, not really - I was just rambling.)

I guess I need to say something on topic, so here's a quote from the late Cecil Purdy, International Master and the first World Correspondence Chess Champion: "Forcing a draw by perpetual check is another motif for combinations. It is like a mating combination, except that the King is never quite cornered. However, if you have an inferior position, it is obviously good play to force perpetual check - and for this purpose you can give up any number of pieces, just as you can for mate."

Yeah, I know the quote doesn't say anything that hasn't already been said by others earlier in the thread, but hey, I just like quoting Purdy. 🙂

As far as his options go, I believe he started to go for the forced draw at move 38. Instead of moving his queen, he might have moved his rook a8b8 or moved his king toward my pawn. Or instead of perpetual check, why not eradicate my pawns and try to get one of his across?
The last you'll hear of me about this. Some analyses checked with engine to avoid tactical oversights (of which there was one.Ha!).
38....,Rb8 39.Qxd5+ instantly loses more material and Black has no good moves after that. His position will keep deteriorating and is in fact resignable.

38....,Kh7 39.Rc7,Rd8 40.Qxd5,Kxh6 41.Qg2,Qxe3 42.Rg1 and I fail to see how Black can defend the various threats.Resignable.

Black has no chance at all to eradicate your pawns and queening one of his own,White's threats are too powerfull.Black is fighting for his life here!

My conclusion: Black's position is lost if it were not for the perpetual. You base your case on the claim Black's position still has potential but it really doesn't.Hence you have no case.

I expect you will still disagree, that's ok,I'm moving along now.
Bye 🙂

Here'a a quick recap of the words that mcstandbooty actually said to his opponent:

He said that his opponent was a "joker" and a "coward", and that his going for the perpetual check was "unsportsmanlike" and "totally dishonorable." He also said to his opponent that "you wasted my time." He also said that going for the perpetual was "spineless."

The irony (or at least one of many) of all of this is that mcstankbooty claims that the perpet rule in this case was against "the spirit" of chess, yet he denies that his words are against the "spirit" of harrasment since he didn't technically harrass his opponent based upon his technical definition of "harrasment."

I hope mcstankbooty apologizes to his opponent.

Really good point.

For what it's worth, now that I've had a day and my blood has cooled, I do feel totally differently. Thank you to those of you who approached this levelheadedly--it really did make an impact on my thinking.

One last thing: since I'm on snjortp's ignore list, I'll post this message I drafted to him here:

Hey there,

I don't know if you watched your forum post escalate into a yelling match yesterday or not, but it was pretty entertaining. I really do owe you an apology. I was interacting with you like you were a friend and we were playing in my living room, and I was reacting to what I felt was an aggressive move on your part--going for the perpetual check. Of course, I was reacting out of total ignorance, and I'm sorry for that. It really was never my intention to bully you into resigning, if that's what happened. That's not really my style. (Taunting you, yeah, that's my style, but we obviously don't have that kind of relationship.) Anyway, I hope none of this got to you too deeply. Good luck in the tournament and in your future games, and if you ever want to play another match feel free to challenge me (though obviously I'll understand if you don't.)

Best,
mcstankbooty

ahh man, snortjp don't buckle under pressure from your opponent.
You had a draw, if you wanted it to be then it would have been a draw.

If your opponent cries, send him some wine instead.

I think in view of the way we all came down on mcstankbooty
earlier, we need to give him some props here. It's one thing to do something wrong or stupid. Everyone's done that from time to time. But, the key thing that separates the wheat from the chaff is whether you can learn from your mistakes. mcstankbooty has humbled himself in public in the above post and I would like to say that I hope I am as mature as this in being able to learn from my own mistakes.

Congrats, it takes a big person to write the above post.

Now maybe work on that screen name. 🙂 🙂

Yeah, ditto on what sh76 said. You're okay in my book. (Except for your handle, like sh76 said. 😛 ) And maybe if anyone had previously put you on ignore, they've now taken you off ignore.

And pay no attention to No1, I guess he just can't handle someone having a change of heart and spoiling his fun. 😉

Edit - Hey, I got the 100th post! Woo hoo!

Yes, congrats to mc for apologizing publicly, it's not easy to do. And to sn for not holding a grudge.

and now we can all live happily ever after...

Cheers,

P.S.
I agree with sh on the rice issue. Difference in population aside, China has a per-capita consumption of rice of 96 kg a year, compared to only 60 kg by Japan. As sh mentioned, this is probably due to a lower average income in China, so that people tend to consume less meat or exotic food compared to Japan, and rely more on the classic rice dish. This may be confirmed by the trend shared by both China and India to lower their rice consumption as their economy grows. It seems that something similar happened in the past to Japan during their economic growth.

i do not really understand
if he has the possibility to make a draw by repetition, that means that you had not avoided that.
so you have made an error
now, if you play well, and you think you must win, but you make an error, so who is wrong then ?

Its nothing to do with economy 😉

Chinese people eat more rice than Japanese people because... the number of Chinese people is higher than Japanese people 😀😀😀

Why do Chinese people eat more rice than Japanese people?

It is not common to eat other people, so I beleive it is easier to eat rice instead 😛
