err... Pardon the interruption of this fine conversation, but i have a question about the french defense. What do people think of 1.e4 e6 2. c4!?
One game I played continued like this...
2.... d5
3. Nc3 dxc
4. Bxc4 Nf6
5. Nf3 Nc3
6. d4
Not a problem 🙂
Is this a game in progress or can I speak freely about it?
Regards,
Alopinoto

So? In the advance variation, the d4 pawn ends up being attacked by black's c pawn, c6 knight, and queen: 3 attackers, and being defended by white's c pawn, f6 knight, and queen: 3 defenders. Same with the winnawer after the knight is ...[text shortened]... way.
Doesn't this mean that the d4 pawn must be lost?
Also, the 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ngf3!? (7.Ne2 is another option.) Qb6 8.O-O cxd4 9.cxd4 Nxd4 10.Nxd4 Qxd4 11.Nf3 gambit isn't totally correct but it scores well & may appeal to a Milner-Barry fans.
