OK, it doesn't feel like a real balls-out gambit but then the Benko Gambit doesn't either. I like that one as well.

Yah that's an interesting gambit... seems completely unsound to me though.

Well it may seem unsound to you but it was good enough for Karsparov to beat Anand, Shirov to beat Timman & Short to beat Huebner to name a few obvious examples.

How about proper chess? One does not need to play gambits to "spice up" your games, you can play solidly and still get good exciting games.

I thought they were for fun!

Like any opening, a gambit is only worth playing if you understand what you're doing.
Take, for example the King's gambit. I can't play King's Bishop's because I just can't get my head around not being able to castle after 3...Qh4+
It doesn't feel right for me, though I know many people swear by it. King's knight's gambit just seems right to me & I understand it better.
I'd be foolish playing 3.Bc4 without studying it & would probably suffer badly.

A gambit played badly is just a material deficit in a defunct opening.
A gambit played well is magic!

but up until the highest levels, almost everyone makes an imperfect move and gets beat up on when their opponents play good gambits.

Fritz beat me with the traxler gambit in 26 seconds in blitz last night.

No, one does not need to, but with the french and english as my main repitoire, the middlegames I reach are getting a bit stale. A few crazy games here and there adds some unusual positions to those middlegames.
