God I wish ppl would hit resign when they are losing, it sure would make my life easier, because, I'm a CHOKER, I lost 3 games in a row off timed chess when I was clearly winning, and just blundered. The key to beating me, is just to make sure your game is 60 moves long (not that hard to do), and I'm bound to choke up one of those moves, in big armeggeddon fashion. I guess I'm not the kind of person that can acheive full concentration for 60 moves. I may be the better player, and many games I'm winning, but if I fall asleep on ONE move, especially the late mid-game (the most deadly period it seems, on the chess board, always choke there, especially with queen freedom), it's over, I minus well be not playing at all.
Any ideas on how I can stop being a choker? I hate playing won positions because I just know I will choke, it always happens, many games I play on timed chess ppl admit my rating should be higher, but I told them I just choke so many won games it's hard to keep a consistantly good rating.

How to stop being a choker? Write down the winning moves in your opinion. Then don't play for 2 days. Return and look at your moves again.
Anyways, what's a good black opening against e4? I tried the Sicilians, they are crap in timed chess, because black's position is closed and white players are pretty much free to put their queen in front of the king's pawn cover and try cheap mates. This newbie tactic annoys me to death, as I am forced to push these pawns a little and sometimes that causes more trouble. Also, with a black queen on c7, it can't really aid the black king against the kingside white queen attack.

Originally posted by mateuloseI would give you one of my win-every-time-without-thinking first moves, but unfortunately, the success of all of them is highly dependent on what happens with moves 2 through 40.

Well, I'm just wondering, what do you do to counter cheap mate attempts? A lot of players put their queen in front of the king's castle and then use their bishops to threaten one move mates that are easy to stop, but even if you do stop it, later on it becomes problematic. Silman says it's a good idea to trade off peices in such a situation, but sometimes trading the peices makes it worse, especially when you can only trade off minor peices and then his maurading queen moves freely and crazily around the board.
One GM recommended amateurs, and especially noobs like me, to look at every square the enemy queen can move each turn, that seems kinda time consuming for a 30 min game, but may releive me of surprises of the queen jumping out on long diagonals, especially a5 and h5. God I hate that peice, I trade it off whenever I can, lol.
To counter weak threats, I move my pawns, bishops, knights, and sometimes my queen. Depends on the situation.
I used to buy lots of chess books. Then at a tournament recently I was talking to another player around the book sale table. He said, "I always buy these books, but I don't get any better." I realized that it was the same for me.
Then I decided to do something that I think has helped my game. I started to pay more attention during my games rather than worrying what some grandmaster would play (which I probably wouldn't understand anyway.)

Try playing the damn position instead of worrying about, and I quote:
"cheap mate attempts"
"openings that are just cheap tactics",
and everything else that beats you even though you are "the better player". Every thread you start is complaining about cheap threats and easy attacks. If they beat you, then maybe you need to rethink your atitude to the game. Defend threats by creating stronger threats of your own. Defend threats by improving the positon of your own pieces. Learn to defend whilst causing the minimum of disruption to your own position and your own plans. Learn to play the game, basically.
I used to play blitz chess against David Howell regularly. Who understood the game better? Me! I knew far more about positional plans, pawn structures, endgame technique, etc. Who won? Well, you guess. Why? Because he was and is very good at making the most of the position in front of him in the time allowed for the game. And I am not. I still love chess even though I can't play well, and get a lot of satisfaction from trying. Sounds like you don't - I don't see the point of continuing to play if so.
Originally posted by OsseYou get little satisfaction when you have read 20 chess books and still suck, sorry, but god doesn't reward me for my hard work, and it pisses me off... What really bothers me about Yahoo, especially when you play black, is I feel I have to defend against some one mate threat every move or so, it's hard to counter attack when you always have to defend queen mate attempts. I wish chess was without queens, I absolutely hate the peice, always have, but I didn't invent the game. I can never win a game by moving my queen around 30 times a game, but they certainly do. I freak out whenever I see that peice move, it's a gut reaction, cuz it always kills me.

I guess I have to study queen maneuvering tactics, too bad GM's don't reccommend this, and there are no books about it.
Originally posted by OsseBTW, what are you complaining about? Your rating is GREAT, you probably study less, and are way better, so you are gifted, I'm not, so you have no right to complain about me, because you don't understand or know what it feels like to be me, ie: the loser who studies hard and always fails, unlike you.

It is impossible - totally impossible - in an otherwise level position for one side to create more than two mate attempts before they run out.
I notice that you never provide game scores either. Any evidence to back up the fact that your opponents can move the Q 30 times in a game (in a middlegame, I assume) and still beat you?
There are plenty of studies and books on tactics involving the Q - all greek gift sacrifices, for starters. Or just study Q v. R mates or Q v. 2 R endgames if you want to learn how to use the Q effectively.
