I heard that this opening, though ugly looking, can be strong surprise weapon in blitz, especially if your opponent is not familiar with its hidden tactics. On the other hand, it is really ugly looking. So if you have some common themes, weak spots in black's position, specific grob lines and nasty traps I would like that you share it with me.
http://www.logicalchess.com/resources/openings/grob/ offers some introduction and nice PGNs but I want to know more to decide if it is worthy to switch from KG to grob against some opponents in 3 0 or 5 0 OTB games.
Thanks for your advice in advance 😛
P. S. If you know the link to some old grob threads, post it, please !

I play it in blitz occasionally and it often does throw people off. At my level it often takes opponents out of familiar lines.

First win, altough I think more because of the confusion factor I provoked in my opponent than valuable moves 😛

What a great opening! You should play it as often as possible but watch those weak black squares.

P92 W83 D6 L3 (a few as black in the Grob tournament) and all of those lost games have been againt players graded well above me (eg Korch) who would probably have won with any opening.
Originally posted by RevRSleekerI hate to admit it but I do likewise. I will rarely deliberately play the Grob against someone graded above about 1600.
Agreed 'Dragon'.....personally, I only play it against a ( perceived ) weeker opponent, or against someone that's playing hundreds of games at one go ...it can 'slip under the net' if not paying attention.. It limits castling opportunities also but that's nothing anybody isn't aware of 🙂

A guy tried it against me at the park in April and I knocked him out cold 🙁

I used to play the Grob a bit in blitz with a fair amount of success, but stopped when I figured that it would be better for me to use my normal openings.
Against prepared opposition, you're basically giving your opponent an advantage. In a tournament game a while ago (time control 1h/game), I had a hint that my opponent might use it, so I studied up on some games such as the one linked to below. I ended up with a good game easily and won due to a tactic caused by White's weakened kingside.

A good example (with annotation) of how black can take advantage of White's first move.
