Does anyone have any stories of how chess has directly played a role in 'real-world' situations?

For examples sake.

Recently I got into a mix where my front door was broken and a local nutcase knew about this and sent some goons around to kosh me over the head and then rob the place while I was in hospital.

I heard them coming and shouted out. The hallway light went on. I knew they were in the groundstairs hallway (appartments @ 4 a.m.). There was no way out other than the way they came in.

So I threw Kellogs crunchy-nut cornflakes out of my window, in front of the main door.

I heard them trample one and curse. I waited. I could hear them talking. Cursing mostly.

2 hours passed. I listened. One of the goons then eventually realised I wasn't
interested in spotting them but was instead recording them. I heard the realisation
and threw a penny from my window to the door.

More cursing and much name calling.

I wait another 2 hours. Not so much waited but prepared my smoke machine
and built makeshift cattleprods from the mains.

Finally one of the goons says to the other. 'You know what he's doing to us is no
worse than what we were planning to him'.

I threw water from the window onto the flakes and waited.

I didn't look.

They left with praises.

I have no doubt Chess helped me through this ordeal.

I no longer support Presidential candidates who fail to demonstrate an interest in chess.

You seem quite pleased with your performance, but from where I'm standing it seems that you are 1p and an unspecified quantity of crunchy nut cornflakes down.

I'm glad you weren't harmed.

You're entirely correct. It could all be in my head but then I'd be down a noodle and they're like 35p at least.

The gambit of giving up the P for tempo is interesting.

Do you think you got enough compensation for the cornflakes?

Of course psychology must have played a big part too.

Do you have a fen for the final position?

I had a similar incident. I timed them out after the two hours. 😕

If you had instead used pot to alter your reality, at least you would have gotten to eat the cornflakes. 😞

I'm not enough of a good chess player to be able to do that.

If you could start me off, I might be able to alter it accordingly.

edit: subsequently I had to move out and put my chess sets in storage.

I might have been divorced if I had not stop playing chess 30 years ago.

P.S. But I continued to play chest with my wife.

It's OK, it's chess players anonymous here. What happened?

At the time I had 4 children and another one on the way. I was not good enough at chess to earn the extra money needed for the family and needed to find part time jobs for that.
