Bobby Fisher was the strongest player in the world for at least 4 years...maybe more. I never liked him though. Fisher was an uncaring, selfish, paranoid jerk! There was no room in Bobby Fisher's world for ANYONE but Bobby Fisher. I'm not happy he is dead, but I can't feel much grief at the thought either.

He certainly was a man of extremes. He was an extremely good chess player with an extremely bizarre personality. As a chess player I focus first on his playing skills and worry about his character traits last. They say ignorance is bliss, right? 🙂

I understand, but I can't study Fischer games because he seemed so crazedly hateful. Based on my rating maybe I should start though.

Hi

A few quotes from:

http://chessedinburgh.co.uk/chandlerarticle.php?ChandID=256

"It's the notice boards and reports from non-players
that are out of order.

It seems that every man and his spotty dog has an opinion
on Fischer's state of mind. Most from people who have
never played over a Fischer game and some from players
who will never understand a Fischer game."

"Fischer loved Chess. He gave his life to chess.
To the rest of the world he may have come across as
greedy, selfish, arrogant, impolite and aloof.

To those that knew him, those he allowed to get close,
he was kind, generous, pleasant, polite and caring."

........

I'll defend everyone's right to say what they want even though
I may strongly disagree with it. I would even fight for your right to say it.

However, speaking ill of the dead is very thin ice.

fischer had all his life to stop being a crazy antisemite jerk. he blew it, and went to grave thinking he was actually right about all that crap. a despicable person.

fortunately for him, there are a lot of people who are willing to ignore all that just because he was good at a board game.

Hi Wormwood.
In his last 20 years Fischer was not a well man both in body and in mind.
Although it is unseen a mental illness is still a disability.

Surely you cannot hold that against him?

Just rejoice in what he done for chess when he was a well man, not
at what he did and said when he was unwell.
If he had not been famous all of his ramblings and rantings would
have been ignored.

well I guess that illness part could be true. but I haven't ever heard that he had been in any kind of medical contact about that, so I tend to think it's just another way of trying to turn a blind eye to all the bad stuff. apologetics.

It has been strongly hinted at that Fischer was on some kind of
medication for his mental problems.

But if you were a journalist fighting a byline the last thing you going
to add to your 'story' is the fact that the person is taking tablets
for a mental disorder. It would make the whole piece meaningless.

Also, There were lawsuits pending.
He knew if news of his medication got out he could be declared unsuitable,
then these cases would have to carried by his lawyers or N.O.K. and
Fischer had a deep mistrust of both.
Hence the secrecy about his condition.

All that mattered to him was becoming the World Chess Champion.
He achieved this against tremendous odds in 1972.

He went back to the place where he had his greatest moment to die.

Let's now leave him in peace.

So what if he was a jerk. What did he owe to any of you? Who gives you the right to judge him?

Could morality exist without judgement?
