Originally posted by shortcircuitSounds like me, lol. You must have been an excellent baseball player! Injuries are a real bummer; I partially tore my MCL twice through soccer. You're right about the name-calling; I certainly don't visit the forums to read it! 🙂
Like you, I also was an athlete in football basketball and baseball. I went to a strong private collge prep high school so most everyone was fairly intelligent. But there were the stereotypical "nerds" that were there and were perpetually glued to a book. I also studied Electrical Engineering and Business in college, and played baseball in college as we ...[text shortened]... o lucky. But I never ventured into the name calling crap anyway. It wasn't worth my time.
Fortunately my friends are considerate of my chess interest and of course I don't talk about chess to non-chessplayers unless they are interested. What's wrong with being a geek-jock-nerd-bando anyway? 😛

i'm no longer playing soccer because i broke both of my hips freshmen year. 3 years later i'm almost fully recoverd enough to do rigerous running. and i don't play baseball any more because my baseball caoch didn't know talent when it hit him in the face
The MCL tears kept me out of soccer. But cross country was a great alternative. And so yesterday was the first time I played in a soccer match in 4 years...
I never really thought of chess as a nerd thing and belive me in my school years I was considerd as cool as they come. 😉 I played a lot of chess in court school which is a school for kids who are in a lot of trouble and forced by the court to attend a trouble maker school 😵 I was the best in there and when my probation officer came for a visit and I beat her also the school went wild 😏 That is one of my favorite chess memories. Thanks Kevin
The Duke, John Wayne was an avid chess player and often played speed chess with the cast and crew on location. Sometimes he would stay up for days playing with intense style between shoots, the Duke never fit the traditional "Nerd" profile. Chess is a game of tradition, and has no borders between its players.

2. The fear of the unknown. many consider chess to be far too complicated to comprehend and therefore it is somewhat taboo or an unknown. Anyone who can delve into the unknown and decipher it's purpose is deemed to be just as feared and unknown. That's right, they are all freaking jealous of the chess geniuses. If we can master chess, we can take over the world and they are afraid of that.
This just made me think of a really interesting article I read on Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi. For those of you who don't know him, The Grinder is one of the top poker players in the world. He's looked up to by thousands of guys and is the epitome of "cool" Besides poker, one of his favorite hobbies just happens to be chess. 🙂
in short, yes it is. But nerds get a lot more respect than they did years ago. Partly due to the fact that a lot of cool people are nerds too, if you get my drift. I'm sure Bill Gates could care less if he is a nerd or not 🙂 Besides, there are nerdier things then playing chess now, like watching anime or something. 😉
It's just a stereotype. People will respect you for who you are.

you're cool if you know what you like to do and don't get swayed by what others think. i enjoy playing chess, i don't need to qualify myself by saying "i play chess but i'm also a tough jock who blew his shoulders, otherwise i'd be in the pro leagues" or "I play chess but i can do a round-house kick to your head in case you doubt my toughness"
