Risky opening, but better than its reputation and may lead to wild complications. If black knows theory, they may have good results (for example when I used to play Latvian Gambit in OTB, my results was good) in it especially if white thinks that they can easily win 🙂 Today have been created thematic Latviang Gambit tournament.

Whats your opinion about this opening?
One of the top players in my area used to play this and i spend a long time learning a line from Keres. It blew him away everytime and he was rated way above me.

The main thrust was a white squared bishop bishop check on the h file. I forget all the lines now i dont play e4 but i thought it was a massive plus for white even with best black play. I cannot agree that it is anything but risky.

Did you mean line 3.Bc4 ?

After 3...fxe4 4.Nxe5 black must play not 4...Qg5 (as i know this line is analysed by Keres the most) but 4...d5, which gives black good play.

Sorry I tried for 30 minutes to work out what i did, but i forget too easy.

That is why i abandoned my theory and avoid main line openings. My openings may be rubbish but they give me a game I can understand a bit.

I thought i played Be2 at some stage so Bc4 seems wrong. I'll keep thinking it will come back.

Maybe its this line - 3.exf5 e4 4.Ne5 Nf6 5.Be2?

I saw it appear while a friend (rated 1850 USCF) played it as white over the board against another 1750 ish USCF
in all the esscense, it is the king's gambit minus a precious tempo... so white is winning, however...
most players regard it as a weak opening and don't take the time to learn the opening as white...
the 1850 friend was caught completely off guard... as he was aiming for a Ruy Lopez
the Latvian Gambit is weak, but it will, almost without fail, catch the opponent off guard...
white's advantage is only a small one, and black can take advantage against slight inaccurate play...
interesting thread...
id recommend playing it against someone who is way to fond of the ruy or italian...

EDIT: i might add that the game between my friend and the other guy it amusing: the black opponent didn't know the opening either, and play went all to hell
they left book move 4, and white's superiority won out

I have stydied theory of this opening and played it few years even against stronger players than me and I can say that white can get some important positional advantage only if they knows theory very well (its means more than reading popular books for beginners or opening encyclopedies), but nothing more.
