As I thought more about it, Richard Reti came to mind, as both were hugely innovative and influential beyond their personal production, but I would never have considered Keene.

I am the Buddy Holly of chess but unfortunately I haven't written any books. When I do I will make sure to contact you.

Actually I would say Morphy is the Buddy Holly... the main parallels being they were both pioneers in their respective professions and they both didn't last very long.
