Not sure about black's opening - 4.Bxg8 Rxg8 5.exf5 seems problematic.

1....Nxb3 {hitting the queen and forcing break up of White's King protection} 2. cxb3 d4 {Opening the line of the bishop} 3. Nxb5 {is one of the available knight moves} Bxb3 {hitting the rook and a4 pawn as well ...[text shortened]... o the b file you must be doing quite well. Maybe better than the game? I don't know}

But what happens after...

Oh I see now. Black can play Qd5 with threats. Yeah, that looks good.
No, maybe not. White could play Nxe5 on move 3 instead of waiting for move 4. Looks like White would be better then. Like this:

No. I guess that doesn't work either because Black can just continue with ...dxc3 capturing the knight and attacking White's queen.

Nxb3 was one of the reasons for me putting the knight on d4 but I got fixated with allowing white to take my knight and retaking with my pawn. This is a common mistake I make when I see an idea I like. I ignore all the other options.

Without the knight to cover the h5 square the opening does look a bit ropey.

I was wondering about the opening. Is Nxe5 and Bxf2+ theory, or is it all a load of nonsense?

5.exf5 looks wrong. It's not a very common line in databases either. And there are no games with 6.Nxe5.

The final position shows me how vulnerable unprotected pieces are. Putting my queen on a file which is likely to be opened with a rook behind it is a very bad idea. The rook lift 14. Rf3 was far too slow.

I don't know if that is theory or not. However, I remembered a game that I played in which my opponent did the same idea in a Bishop's Opening. I knew it was one of my early games on here before I learned to use the analyze board feature so I was able to find it quickly since it was the 11th game that I finished on RHP. This game only lasted a couple of days and I made some very bad moves that caused me to lose, but this is it.

His name was cristian. Perhaps I had something psychological about beating a christian.

In your game 6...Qe7 attacking and pinning the knight looks best.

Minor round 3.

I was pleased with this game as I really hate playing against d4 'system' openings.

I am far from an expert myself but after 7.Bxf5 its essentially a positional and strategic blunder by white to my mind, looking at the pawn structure, it opens the e file against a hopelessly backward pawn, if i was black i would have piled up on that pawn, along the e file, with rooks and queen, maybe Nf4, pawn break ...c5. I don't understand ...Bxe5 by black, was it really necessary, to allow white to block such a juicy open file after the recapture, i dunno! Nice to see you play a reversed London system, especially after all the nonsense that has been spoken of it on these very forums!

Black in round 4

In the final round my opponent Ian Hope was in the lead with 4/4. I was 2nd with 3.5/4 with a big group right behind me on 3/4. This meant that if I won the final game I would be 1st. If I drew I would be 2nd= and if I lost I would be nothing. So I go for the win.

Around move 18 I went to the toilet. I bumped into an amiable Glaswegian I had spoken to the day before who was playing in the same section. The usual pleasantries ensued, how's your game going etc.

him: How are you getting on?
me: I'm a piece down but I may still have some tricks.
him: Ian hope is winning so he's going to come 1st.
me: 🙁
him: Who are you playing?
me: Ian Hope.

I also walked past the organisers table and noticed a laptop with a familiar chess position displayed on it. It was the game I was playing. Only then did i remember that the game was live on the internet with a possible 6 billion viewers. But more likely 6.

White in the last round
