If anyone tells me how to win this before I do it myself then we have agreed it shall be a draw.

I have never seen this before but I have 2N v lone P.

I know this sort of ending is an exception to the 50 move rule but is the pawn in the right place? can it be won?

Over to you experts.

Wow, hm. This would be very tough to gain a win from, I'll look at it for a while, but I'm sure I won't be able to figure it out.

EDIT: And it sucks being two pieces up and unable to win 🙁. Or so I would assume.

Fortunately I have a book by Yuri Averback. Chapter 14 is how to win with 2 Knights v Pawn and this position is favorable for it.

Refresh my memory: can you win with the two knights verses a king by itself?

I think it depends on the position, almost always the answer is no though.

Well i saw a lecture on this from chesslecture.com, the basic idea is to blockade the pawn with one of the knights and then to push the king into a corner using the king and the other knight,if i remember corectly you have to get the king into a position where he only has 2 squares to move back and forth and then bring the other knight to deliver checkmate, the pawn is needed so you don't stalemate you're opponent. Although i think in the given position the pawn is too far advanced. I think what I said is a bit basic but it might be helpful.

I managed to get checkmated by two lone knights once. The catch was that he also had a rook pawn - I had to rush my king over to the corner to take it and I was duly trapped and mated by the remaining two knights. That was the only time I can recall being checkmated by anyone.

No! the weaker side must have a pawn for mate to be forced by the 2 Knights otherwise the best that can be given is stalemate. So the stronger side cannot take the pawn!

Correct the idea is to blockade the pawn and force the knight to the corner with the king and other knight.

After reading omulcusobolani's post, I realized this. Interesting 🙂

Do you know how to mate with B&N, it might help, I know I'd try to learn that first if i had you're position, I think both checkmates share some paterns.

Just looked at your timebanks, could he have timed you out if he wanted/wants to?

No we are playing a blitz game with no timebank. Started only yesterday.

From this position

1 .. Kh7
2. Ng4 .. f7
3. Nf6+ .. Kh8
4. Nh4 .. f7=Q
5. Ng6#

so all I have to do is force him to h8 and my book tells me how to do that.

Solved all by myself so I can claim the win.
