Right, i want to get better! I lost my first OTB game in over a year today! I was totally, competely and utterly out played in every way and i REFUSE to have this happen again! I don't care that my opponent was much higher graded, I'm gonna get higher! I need tips from people who've been stuck at 1600/1700 and managed to get beyond! Getting to 1600 is a piece of pi$$, getting over and staying over isn't. There must be one thing that will REALLY improve my game, a one stop, put 100 points on your game sort of study that i can do. Anyone got a gem they've been hiding??

Because there's no fun in having a dull, serious thread. A little injection of humor never hurt anyone.
Originally posted by marinakatombtheres no evidence to support that. my rating is nothing compared to some, yet i know how to play chess and do have some semblance of strategy. if you'd like a game, id be more than happy to play one with you so you can practice, and who knows, maybe i might say something insightful. its up to you. i play people well above my rating and people well below, because no matter who it is, you can always learn something. sometimes its as simple as humbleness. dont jump to conclusions that you're going to beat someone seemingly weaker than you, because thats when it happens. and there is a lesson right there. never underestimate anyone. send me a game if you like.
Ok, you got the joke bit right...Don't suppose you'll have anything useful to say on chess so i suppose leaving it there is fine...

FINISH YOUR FRAPPING GAMES🙂
That big dump you took on your rating, long vacation?
Hope it wasn't like me and Kat, hospital. I was ok, only in for a couple
of days, got out of trouble on the clan games!
Seriously, have you looked at some of the links for improvement?
You are already pretty strong so you don't need advice about the
key squares or space points, etc. You need harder problems to
solve. I will see what I can find, post a link.

I haven't used this one but its exercises downloadable.
A long time ago, I had a job in Thailand tending a microwave
link, had 12 hour days with not much to do, so I got a lot of
chess books. The one that I studied the most was a two volume
set by Max Euwe (ex world champ, ca 1935) This was Dynamic
chess and Static Chess, Static mainly the study of pawn formations
that don't change much for ten or more moves which uses strategy
and the other, dynamics positions, tactics. What I didn't know then
and wish I had it then, was books in algebraic. The old english
notation, Pawn to King four kind of thing really slows down your
study. A2 to A3 is a lot easier to visualize because its the same
move regardless of whether its black or white. With the old
english notation, you have to switch viewpoints for every move,
now it would drive me batty doing that. I just got a great book,
The life and Games of Tal. Originally in English notation, now updated
to algebraic. This book is special because of the story like way
Tal handles the games. He sets the mood of the time of each game
and goes through each game and bunches of variations, each game
taking like 5 or more pages to complete. Its a great book.
I would like to see Euwe's two set volume redone in algebraic.
I assume you already went through Averbach endgame studies.
thats a classic. or Tarrash's classics. I also assume you go over every
loss in the game history with a fine-tooth comb, seeing where you
screwed up. That is an important tool for sure. Also having your
game analyzed by a master would be even better, they would for
sure see stuff you missed. Good luck, eh.
Originally posted by sonhouseThank you! At last, someone who at least try's to answer the question!! That rating slump was necissary, i had 60 games on the go and i was just wasting my time as i wasn't analysing properly. I quit all my games (wins/losses/draws...) and made a point of playing properly! Now i'm beating decent players (16's 17's and occasionally 1800's) which wasn't happening before. I think i need to choose some different openings perhaps. I favour open tactical positions but i play quite slow positional openings. I realize openings aren't all there is to know, but my general technique is ok, providing i don't get squashed in the first 10 moves or so...

Originally posted by marinakatombWork on your defensive play and focus on trying to avoid/protect postional weaknesses in your game. With no weaknesses in your position, you cannot lose, it's a win or draw. That's my advice.

Originally posted by marinakatombHiya, well although I'm 1800 ish I don't really feel qualified as I think any day now there will be a huge correction (but I must say I also thought that when I got to 1700). I too went through what you are (and I still am as I would like to get to 2000...but don't really think I ever will, but that isn't going to stop me trying). Anyway back to the point, there is ONE significant thing that I did, and that was to cut my games down, I went through a period when I had about 60 current games and lost to (no offence to lower rated players) an 1100 player and that was a wake up call to me. I deceided to play far fewer games but allocate more time to each game and play better quality chess. That WILL increase ytour rating BUT will it make you a better player? it could be argued that playing 60 games with a rating of say 1650 is just as good as playing 1800 with 20 games. I do however think that getting into good habits will be a good foundation to build on. Another thing I intend to do is analyse more WHY I lost games, I haven't got around to this yet which I will do, but the more games you are playing the less time you (and I) would have for this analysis. However changing the subject slightly my first task is to get my otb game back its gone hopeless since playing on here.
