Originally posted by THUDandBLUNDERI do not see that as more confusing than the en passant and castling rules are originally for beginners. Besides a piece's value (pawns included 🙂 ) depends greatly on the position, for instance in the endgame phase pawns tend to become one of the most valuable pieces due to the promotion opportunities ahead, which is one more confusing rule for newbies.
My intention was to pose a couple of questons often asked by newbies (hence the thread name) about common chess terms which are often understood only intuitively.
Anyway, imagine a beginner being taught about pawns and pieces and how pieces are worth more than pawns, etc. Then he learns about check, checkmate, discovered check, etc. Imagine further ...[text shortened]... gainst him, while trying to explain with a straight face that sometimes pawns are pieces!
.
Yes, being a newbie is quite a stressful stage.

THUDandBLUNDER contributes some good puzzles, both chess and otherwise, to this site. Perhaps you should look at more of his posts before making a snap judgement.
That, however, does not detract from the fact that his posts on this thread are more in line with "Ha! I'm smarter than you are - Nyah nyah nyah" than "I'm a newbie - I don't understand this term; Help!"
Also, while his contributions to the Puzzles & Posers forum are to be lauded; one cannot forget that RHP is a correspondence chess site and the primary value of RHP derives from its chess games.
Originally posted by lucifershammerThat's a rather narrow view - RHP has a wide variety of forums that are all very active. Surely those contribute a great deal to the site's value. It is a bit strange for people to complain that non-subscribers 'waste valuable server space' with posts, yet complain that they don't play enough games (which would take up more server space as well).
Perhaps. I apologise.

Then perhaps your lead-in was a little misleading?
No 'bait' or 'guise' was intended. But for the sake of the other posters I will choose to ignore your gratuitous slurs on my ...[text shortened]...
This player woukld be better served if you simply explained en-passant... without the sarcasm.
To start a thread by asking a question, and then become confrontational with the kind people who try to answer it for you is petty at best. This is not a "gratuitous slur" on your "character", but an accurate observation of your conduct.
