I haven't been playing here for especially long, so I haven't yet had to play an engine user who was subsequently banned. However there was one opponent that in retrospect was clearly using an engine. How I discovered this is an unusual story.
We had two games going, as White I misplayed a sacrifice and was struggling to draw, and as Black I faced some rather deep opening moves (15 Ne5!) yet managed to sac a pawn for an attack.
Then my opponent disappeared for several weeks. I did not flag him, he'd been nice enough. Then he returned. In both games, his return moves were horrible blunders. As White he allowed a simple mate in 3 (33.Bb5??). As Black he gave back his extra piece (31...Rxc2??), after which the game was drawish. I kept pressing and eventually he gave up his R for my last pawn, leaving K+R v. K. After this he offered a draw (!) because he didn't see how I could win it. Dead give away that you're not a strong player.

Thread 45885
It's definitely not Fritz, and it appears weaker than Fritz, but it reminded of the Junior z00t's Fritz beat in the playchess.com game that z00t posted in another thread.
well ive been playing here for a few months and have found that the correspondance sites are really good for educational purposes. I dont agree with the fact you can use your books on openings to play with.Ive been playing on the internet for years and cheating has been going on, on every site .It doesnt matter which site. Its really hard to tell how good your theory is anymore unless your playing over the board. You play players rated 1800-2000 plus and always feel like you have a winning chance....then you play players who are 1200-1500 and thay play absolutely perfect never making any mistakes and never ever trade a bishop for a knight unless its for the win. It just isnt to much fun anymore. The thing is is that it takes a lot of hard work to become adept and proficiant at all three phases of this game.Players who cheat are lazy and doubtful of themselves. Its to bad.
This is a fascinating thread, and as a player of 2222, very concerning to me. I have seen a recent spate of my opponents banned and I never suspected any of them. I wonder how many great players have been banned when they are not cheating? I fear i will be banned soon, as obviously a good player is going to be investigated at some point. What shoud a good player do then?? I used to play for England, and my record clearly shows how rusty I was when I started playing chess again on this site and how I have got gradually better. I agree it is very sad if a player has to cheat, but worse if a good player gets banned for being good. Very interesting.

EDIT: This post assumes you aren't black and American. If you are then the odds favour the murder rap.
Originally posted by carpisteThe games mods analyse players' games, and compare the moves they chose to those chosen by a number of engines. On the basis of statistical analysis they come to a conclusion about the probability that a player is using an engine. I don't know the threshold they use, but it's sufficiently high to make an incorrect banning very unlikely. I imagine, but don't know, that one of their requirements for banning someone is that they can positively identify the engine that the cheat is using. This means that some engine users slip through the net, but the games mods prefer this to banning the innocent. If you do not use an engine then you won't get banned.
