I refer you first two posters to my note after move 16
by the Frenchman in my thread that was hijacked.

"....You will have to set them deeper than that to catch me."

I aint nibbling. 😉

(...was expecting Robbie to claim that Colle carved the pieces.)

Well, out of respect for your firsthand and far superior knowledge on the subject, I did at least put "chess" in quotation marks!

EDIT: For those new to the forum, I meant "firsthand" in that Greenpawn34 has seen the pieces on display at the museum and has studied them extensively, and not "firsthand" in the sense that he used to play with same pieces back in the day!😉

funny you should say that, i think there is some evidence that his real name was M'Colle and whose clan did indeed originate from the Islands of Sky and Lewis.

I am sure the MacLeods fought the MaColle's with the Black pieces for dominance of Lewis and Skye.

As my friends in Florida say, "There can be only Juan".

It was a timed post to get me ranting. I know a set up when I see one.

These gaming pieces were carved by Eskimo Colle.

Then they're nothing to do with that set, since it's obvious that they were imported from the Shetlands. Both Scots and Norse influences, right? Shetland, where else?
Clearly no connection at all with the man from the rudest expletive in the known Galaxy. (BTW, that provenance, and we wonder why it's a silly opening? Any Dutchman could tell you.)

Didn't the vikings control most of northern Scotland in the early middle ages?

Maybe I'm wrong as I learn all my history from the Totalwar pc games.

Yes, and their influence can still be felt on the Northern island groups more than in the rest of Scotland. Hence my suggestion: if these are Norse-crafted chess pieces which ended up in Scotland, Shetland (or possibly the Orkneys) is the first origin which springs to mind. Iceland? Well, it's possible... but something a bit closer to home seems more likely.

If you look at the underside of the bases you will find the "made in China" stamp.

Nope. I checked. Just a piece of red felt.
