greenpawn: While I agree with you that Qxf6+ is a nice combination and that understanding that combination is worthwhile, I disagree that this is what the OP overlooked, because you are implying that it is the only move that wins and we know that is not true. The OP overlooked the mate threat and could have won routinely with any number of moves. For example, my first choice in that position in a time pressure situation would have been the "boring" Qf5, which is just about as effective as the more spectacular Qxf6+.

We are like a bunch of necrophiliacs on this one.
1.Rf3 1.Rg3 1.Qf5 these are all good - anything that stops the mate in one is good.
It's horses for course.
Given any position I always look for the forcing moves, checks, sacs etc..
If I was shown this position without knowing what happened I would have
gone 1.Qxf6+ etc and doubt if I would have seen the mate in one.
sac check, sac check, Knight check, Knight takes Queen. 1-0
and there is no danger of walking into a mate in one as it's all with a check.
"I fear no one when I give check." Some famous chess player said that.
I like the clockwork precision of 1.Qxf6+ it would not look out of place
in a book of combinations (where indeed there are often altenative ways to win).
So horses for courses.
Some players look at their King safety first.
Me. I'm always looking to force replies that benefit me.
As for insisting it was the only move.
Well that was just me trying to get into spirit in which I thought the OP intended.
I thought anyone who comes on and says they play like a grandmother is up for a laugh.

Its not horses for courses. How many moves will it take to win
1. For Greenpawn's method - 20-30 moves to mate him
2. For Rf3?
Don't forget that even if this were CC there are players who will carry on and prolong the game for two weeks.
you are beginning to sound like one as well. 😉
My way it's over. There can only be one outcome.
Your way there is still a possibility, as happened in the game,
that you will still walk into a mate in one.
You missed it once, you may miss it it again.
It's best to clear the field of threats with checks. Then there is nothing to miss.
