What are everyone's favorite openings for white and defense for black?
I prefer the King's Gambit and French defense.
As black i like using Slav & Semi Slav as a counter against white's Queen gambit. Have been getting pretty goood results so i will probably keep it for awhile. Am really interested in finding another one for white & black too add to my arsenal someday. Considering French Defense. In a site i used to play on there was a guy there was most the time unbeatable with it.

For the last several days I've been playing the Grob as White ( 1 g4) and the Borg (Grob reversed) as Black: 1 e4 g5 or 1 d4 h6 2 c4 g5.
I've been scoring well with it in blitz.
I change my openings about as often as I change my socks. (And I DO change my socks at least once a week!)

1. e4
Quite happy to play most variations of the Ruy. Comfortable enough with French, Caro-Kann, Pirc, Philidor's, Alekhine's etc. Mixed results with the Sicilian.
Black:
Against 1. e4
I've been playing the Sicilian for a while, but I guess my main comfort zone is still the Ruy.
Against 1. d4
Normally play the Nimzo-Indian or Queen's Indian. Looking at other options here.

I'd say the opening I have used most is the Ruy or Guccio Piano.
I am working on using the King's Gambit because the games that come from it are very tactical and interesting. It's especially fitting in a CC game since you can setup the board and really look into it.

well in that case, I feel that the hate that Americans seem to have of the French is stupid, as France has been the longest ally of the U.S. (ever since the Revolutionary War)

j/k I don't especially hate the french... They make good fries and gave us a 150 foot tall green chick who hangs out in the NY harbor. (although I don't think she shaves her armpits)

I play mostly league games/challenges for my clan, so I prefer straightforward openings that get me to a decent middlegame. Taking too many chances with unsound stuff makes my teammates work harder when I flubb an opening!
So, Queen's Gambit in all its incarnations, a preference for classical variations in the nimzo and KID, and as black, the French and QGD or slav. I think im better at endgames than the opening, so I try to get there...

As white c4 with out question.
If you try to force me into a queen pawn game (such as e6 then d5 or c6 and d5) i will play the catalan (especially in otb)
Against e4 I play alekhine and against just about anything else (and I do mean ANYTHING) I try and play some variation of the dutch.
however if my openent is stubborn and chooses to play the birds...i will play mainline

many people move fast here. im simply putting a more appropriate name for it.
since when has there been a rule stating you cant move fast or you have to think forever on a move?
