My definition of lost cause is being down, without chance of winning.
The only way to be down without chance of winning is if you have no material. Even then your opponent can resign, it's happened. And of course you can fight for a draw.

i never said that you were the impatient winner and no, you never said that your opponent was being malicious; i was simply trying to illustrate and conlclude the answers to your question..

The problem i see is that sometimes players jump to conclusions that their opponent is being spiteful and start labelling unbalanced games to be bad etiquette.

Also, your initial example was: ''Say one player makes a dumb move early in the game and exchanges a queen for nothing...'' i do not see this as being 'without a chance of winning'..
Furthermore, if we a now discussing ''lost cause/without any chance of winning'' end games then my answer is still the same.

a\ yes - playing on out of spite or to manipulate ratings is bad etiquette

b\ no - playing on to learn more about end game, or hoping for a lucky break, or playing for stalemate, or even out of pride is not bad etiquette.

How can it be bad etiquette if I am not offended by it? Personally I'm absolutely delighted when a doomed opponent plays on to checkmate because checkmate is the point of my pieces being there in the first place.

What if he makes you wait for 6 months then resigns with mate in 1.

ah, looks like this is a dead thread, but I'll bring it back to life once more to show a comeback I made right at the verge of resignition.

This game hardly can be defined a "lost cause",since your opponent didn't have clear winning odds, and when both queens are still no the board everthing is possible.

The game I previously shown was INDEED a lost cause from move 30 but the guy choose to play till the inevitable end.Game 1120635
