sure, its theft. I never said otherwise. But of course that does not mean its wrong in every case. So your going to tell us you never download anything?! Because you want bill gates to get his "rightfully" earned money?

Theft of intellectual property is still theft.
Downloading is copying someting for someone, its the same as copying a book or recording a movie on your vcr.

I download practically everything, I'm a student for god sakes!

I'm still sitting on my horse thanks because not "everyone" records movies onto blank tapes. If you want to watch a movie without ads go and rent it.
Here we have kingbongo attempting another 2 (non) excuses for theft, he tries to ease his conscience with:
1/ "everyone" else is doing it...news for kingbongo even if everyone was a theif, theft would still be wrong.
2/ "I'm a poor student" boohoo boohoo I could hardly read your post through the tears....tears of laughter you poor sap.

Twenty years ago we all recorded our favorite bands on old tapes.
Ten years ago we all recorded some movie from Tv with a vcr.
Nowadays there's internet where you can download free stuff.
Tell me,genius on a high horse : If downloading is considered theft, why the net is full of sites where you can download free stuff?
Are they all thieves-managed sites? If so why "theft" is allowed on those sites?
again :you high-horse-guys are plain ridiculous.

Undoubtedly you'd love "everyone" (is that the same "everyone" kingbongo was talking about?) reduced to your level.
My level? what's "my level"?
Aren't you a non-subscriber free loading here and pretending to make the moralist about copyright and stuff?
Pay a subscription otherwise shut up and enjoy the games you're having here for free.

There is the "everyone" in your post.
Ravellos attempts at conscience easing:
1/ "We all" have stolen something at sometime during our life...that makes it ok to carry on doing so.
2/ Some drivel about there being alot of sites where it is easy to download copyright material...this amounts to: If it's easy to steal, hey, why not.
3/ Attempts to equate free membership with his theivery.

Ravellos attempts at conscience easing:
I give you a hint : I was not trying to "ease my conscience" simply because I don't feel my conscience "dirty" because I downloaded a chess ebook on the net.
Lighten up and take it easy dude, thievery and theft are too much of big words for what we're speaking about.
Originally posted by RavelloLet's take a step backward. If I create something - like music, movies, books, articles, etc I own the copyright. I have the choice then to sell that material, to sell my copyright or to give it away. After a number of years, my copyright rights fall away (depends on the country laws but could be 40 years or more).

If, as a current copyright owner, I choose to give it away, then that's my choice. Only then is it *free*. Otherwise, it's *not*. Next time you download, take the time to look up the author, mail him and ask him if it's okay with him.
For smeg's sake, you guys believe that because it's there, it must be okay - like a car with the keys left inside.
Giving away your copyrighted material can be a powerful marketing tool and more and more people are using it. Writers publish chapters to promote their books, Jeremy Silman and losts of other chess sites give away material for free, there's a great South African music site www.sampr3.com where you can legally download music for free, and many more.
Are the sites you're talking of legal, or are they just stealing? Answer the question.
