After a long, devestating and awfully demoralizing losing streak in rapid games (30 min) in FICS, I decided to go back to long time controls. However, people in FICS surprisingly probably just hate long games as a whole, consistent community, I really don't know why.
So my options are playchess or ICC, (or if there are others, I would like to get an idea about them too.)
What server would you recommend for 1500-1700 level in long time controls? Is it possible to find opponents for at least 90 min. games without waiting for hours in these servers?
addendum:
actually, is it a good idea to just refuse playing rapid games because I suck at them? Which way is the best way to proceed, just keeping pushing it (or maybe even playing blitz), or just playing at long time controls?
When I started playing rapid games in FICS, my rating just went down to 1488 from mid 1600s, and I really am totally demoralized. I almost feel like I will never win a game or something, and I have no sign of improving, which is the worst in all this. I simply cannot calculate with very limited time. if you also have any training methods for this, I would appreciate it.
Originally posted by diskamylI was once told perhaps I should try checkers, but I didn't fair out so well at that either.

Originally posted by diskamylI can play with you a long game (90min + 30s or something like that), just not now. I came today from an OTB, so got to take a little rest. Maybe tomorrow. I'll PM you, if you want to.

I am not sure how my post relates to the original post, but I would like to see RHP have a shorter time limit available. Example: 10 min moves vs 3 days. There are times when I just want to play a game and have it done. I know there is blitz but I would like the shorter game to affect my rating. Don't missunderstand, I very much enjoy playing the long term game also. Chessatwork makes work so much nicer.
Blessings to all

It's still a beta site and the games are unrated, but you can set up your own time controls there and play some fast games.
Originally posted by diskamylGood luck I use to play 60 minute games but it's virtually impossible to find anyone willing to play at those time controls anymore unless you join the STC Bunch.

The reason People don't like long time controls is due to cheaters with programs they killed slow Chess you'll only see 60 and 45 minute games in tournaments where there are rules the games are closely watched and before any prizes are awarded abuse analyzes the winners games.
Another point is that long games via a computer can be sore on the eyes. In addition Internet chess is a different proposition to OTB since its 2-dimensional rendering means that the game becomes different, spatially speaking. If you want a good long game then joining a club and playing OTB is the best IMHO. Of course I know this is sometimes not feasible.

For "refusing" games. Have you used the formula on FICS - that way you only see relevant games - no need to refuse. Also on FICS, there is a channel (maybe 90) devoted to long games.
For calculating faster, try pointing a well known search engine at this: "michael de la maza skittles"
I have this article in book form, which you can find by leaving out the "skittles". It is not for everyone, but I am certain that even just starting what he suggests was useful for me. Silman's review hits the nail on the head.
The only time I think calculating faster is in any way important in over the board chess, is in Blitz finishes - an you should not care unless you find yourself losing on time. I found that juniors at my club would beat me at blitz, but I stood a chance at longer time controls. For me that is just life.
Do you find that correspondence chess gets in the way of this, or does it help?
Originally posted by gezzaI have read those skittles, gezza, and although they might be helpful, it's nor really realistic for me to aim going through 1000 problems 7 times in that amount of time. It'll be at least 2 or more years of work, but I'm working with CT-Art for a while and just hope it helps in the long run.

I think RHP helps because I at least find myself a little familiar with positions arising from my openings.

Try the blitz link at the top of the page next to "Sieges".

To THPaladin:
I don't like the idea of short time controls within a correspondence chess site (especially if it is going to impact the rating). OTB and correspondence are very different games (which allow for different sets of rules), and to mix OTB with corresponence will skew people's ratings to something meaningless. Some players are very good OTB, but hopeless at corresponence, and vice versa. Also, the interface isn't designed for fast games. Hence the point and click, rather than drag and drop (as you would expect with blitz).
I would say keep blitz and correspondence separate. 🙂
Originally posted by diskamylI also do not have time/motivation to complete 7 * 1000 puzzles. But I found the drills useful, having done them for a few weeks. I also worked with CT-Art for about an hour a day for 2 to 3 weeks. I know that it helped me alot. I also took the idea of computer analysis and plotting a graph, and applied it to my games.

I have seen various suggestions of how MdlM was able do do what he wrote about, as it takes a major chunk out of six months of your life, but I guess there is evidence of the grade improvement. I don't necessarily agree with everything he wrote, in particular he talks about having had coaching and books which may have given him a good basis when the tactical issues were solved, but analysing your games when they are done seems sensible. Analysis by hand or with a computer are going to show different things, but if you look, you may find something you can improve.
Tactics were definitely a weakness for me. Having improved that a bit, openings were and remain a weakness. I am sure that my endings are not perfect, but to quote Tarrash: "Before the endgame, the gods have placed the middle game." At my level, and for me, tactics are still key, but openings and now middlegame are why I am here.
