... starts on Saturday. Guess the marquee game will be Carlsen vs. that Chinese kid who played that tremendous rook sac game last year.

Exactly what I was thinking. 🙂

A win would be huge for Yi and show an arrival a few years early. My prediction though it probably will be like Tal v Fischer where Tal wins the first few quite easily but then when Fischer hits his 20s the score completely flips.

Wei-Carlsen draw, 60. Mamedyarov left a rook hanging against Eljanov. Nice to know that if a 2750 can do that, there's still hope for me!

I thought Wei Yi v Carlsen was a good game, i was worried it would be a dull draw. I wonder if the Kid has any idea how much is expected of him? Does he even speak English? I'd love to know how well known he is in China..

Magnus opened with 2 completely dead drawn/no counterplay games, you have to figure he was going to test Wei with something critical, and it didn't disappoint. He held his own.

As for the blunder, I agree its good to see them in more human terms. . . misery loves company. 😉 I have been meaning to get together a set of FM vs GM games, to humanize FMs play in my mind so I'm not psyched out by seeing FM as an achievable goal.

Hopefully the Chinese don't do to Wei Yi what they always seem to do with their great talents... push, push, push to get him to spend nearly all his time working on chess, and burn him out and thereby demotivate him - instead of the motivation coming from within

Carlsen destroyed Eljanov, and leads by a point, thanks to Caruana beating Deng.

Actually Carlsen and Caruana are equal first, a point clear of the field...

Not anymore as Carlsen drew and Caruana lost to Navarra in the 8th round, a bit of an upset there!
