that's part of the 0/60 time controls you get. He's just being smart and will win on time. This is how chess works

give your american friend your pass and a list of all possible moves to respond with, then have them check from 1-2 AM (GMT) and play your moves for you.

Essentially making the whole game by conditional moves, but via proxy rather than computer.

Personally i thought chess was about playing to win, and if that isn't on the cards, playing for a draw, and if neither of those two are options resigning. Maybe i'm just being naive.

'Time management strategy for internet correspondence chess', by Proper Knob. Don't think that would do to well as a chess book.

yes chess is about playing to win, and this is exactly what's happening here.
Win in the game or win on time.
You can't have one person OTB or on CC taking forever to make moves and thus calculating more deeply and calculating better variations, while the other guy blitzes. Of course the first guy will get a better position while the latter will get a time advantage. Chess is a game of finding a fine balance between calculating as much as you can while still managing your time.

It's cheap of him to win on time of course, but it's all well within the rules.
He's not the first, he's not the 100th, he's not the 1000th person to do this on RHP, and won't be the last. Anyone would do it, it's a part of chess strategy.

This may be a silly question, but can't you just put up a vacation flag to prevent yourself from timing out over the next few weeks?

Because he has a lot more time than me, he doesn't need to move. He can just wait till my vacation time is up and then carry on and claim the win. Which he will do.

I understand about time management and he's not breaking the rules. I have other games where i'm probably going to be timed-out but they're a lot more even so i don't mind. They had x amount of time to move the same as me and if times up then fair enough. What annoyed me was that at some point he thought to himself 'if i move at this time of the day my opponent can't move for x amount of hours and in 10 days i can claim a win in a game i wouldn't have otherwise have won.'.

I just find his behaviour a little ungracious and wanted to know if i was being too sensitive. Anyway, he's still is going to get a volley of abuse from me. 😉

Just spend a lot of time on conditional moves. Program every possible reply. It'll take a lot of time but if you're winning by that much you should be able to take the games.

Whenever I play chess with a set time control, I think of the clock as I would a piece on the chessboard. I try not to hang my Queen, and I try not to hang my clock! If one agrees to a set of rules for a game, I don't see how one can be offended by someone taking advantage of a rule that was agreed to before the game even started.

I would rather go without sleep until it was my move rather than lose either of those games...they were yours for the taking!

I tried. I just didn't have enough time in the bank. I put myself on vacation, he just didn't move, waited till it was over and claimed the win.

In the game where i was two moves from checkmate, i stayed up, put on some conditional moves. He moved, waited for the conditional move, then moved again and then claimed the win when my time ran out a few minutes after it happenned.

Never come across anyone like it??!!!

Hm. Deep mode might have helped you there. By now it is a moot point but might help you in the future.

I'm in the same situation, but I have a good 3:1 time advantage. It's so annoying that I hung one of my rooks, and now only enjoy being up the exchange and three pawns.
