Nevertheless, the higher rated player is not obligated to teach chess to those who are 400+ points below him, and it's ridiculous to accuse someone of arrogance just because he wants a competitive game of chess.

sometimes it's a case of big downside (the loss of rating points) versus small upside (if the much higher rated player wins he was 'supposed to' anyway and gets hardly any rating points)

some people play that way. I'll accept a challenge from any rating though...

Never accused anyone of arrogance, maybe an inflated ego, and how do you know he wouldn't get a competitive game; now that smacks of arrogance.

The point of the rating system is to work out who will give you a competitive game, and who won't. If you're 400+ points below someone, chances are, you won't.

you must be kidding. a 1700 doesn't get any kind of competition from a 1200, it just doesn't happen.

a 1300 once took my criticism of another 1300's game as arrogance, and wanted to show me what's what. we played 8 games and he lost every single one. while it was kind of fun to play instructive games, I can't say that I had any competition. I was around 1550 then. it's not arrogance, it's just the way it is.

True. I cosider it a favour if a 1600+ player accepts a challenge from me, its like Chelsea v Huddersfield town. . .no competition.

My rating is below 1200 and I am working to have it improved. Never the less, I recently played a game against some one with a rating of 1705. I think that I provided good competition. I even won

And how exactly is arrogance different from having an inflated ego?

The odds of getting a competitive game from a player rated 400 points lower are extremely slim. That's not arrogance, it's statistics.

He blundered a queen, although that may have been intentional. And one example of a 1200 getting lucky isn't good enough to convince me that 1200's provide strong competition against 1700's.

1200's, think of it this way. What do you think the odds are that an 800 will beat you if you guys play?

I've had the same one for 8 years. it seems I'm in a zugzwang.

Nah that's cool! Who was the GM?

I drew with Nakamura in a simul on the ICC once. The moves are framed on my wall.

OK I thought! I will help the poor guy out and give him a little advice.

Guess what? My challenge was not accepted!
