Dale can i ask you why you choose unorthodox openings? it seems to me that you can achieve just as unorthodox positions through Gambits, Albin Counter Gambit, Froms Gambit, Falkbeer Counter etc etc.

Its almost not like I choose unorthodox openings although I arguably do.
Its just that I attempt to provide difficulties for my opponent and end up playing weird accidentally by attempting to provide those difficulties.

I posted this puzzel a LONG time ago, but I imagine most people don't remember it, so here goes:

[/b]
White to move and mate, WITHOUT MOVING HIS KING

Before a load of you come screaming that it's not possible, analyse the position first.

(and no, I don't mean stalemate)

The hidden feature didn't work for me for some reason. I can force the King to the edge but getting the tempo right to be able to force him along the left or bottom edges is hard!

I must've seen this before, but I believe that I didn't understand it the first time either 😛

One possible solution:

1. Qc8+ Ka7 2. Qe8 Kb7 3. Qd8 Kc6 4. Qe7 Kd5 5. Qf6 Ke4 6. Qg5 Kf3 7. Qh4 Kg2 8. Qf4 Kh1 9. Qh6+ Kg1 10. Qh3 Kf2 11. Qg4 Ke3 12. Qf5 Ke2 13. Qf4 Ke1 14. Qd2+ Kf1 15. Qh2 Ke1 16. Qg2 Kd1 17. Qf1#

Edit: I'm too dumb to use proper tags. Also, added problem reference. Also also, took an improper shortcut in the first solution.

Looks like mate in one has metamorphisized into mate in 17.

Maybe this is now the fast learners thread.🙂
