As for my opinion, I don't think you can define chess as a sport as it has the knock on effect of making all board games a sport. Is 'Hungry hungry hippos' a sport? What about Twister? Snakes and Ladders?? I don't think many people would consider any of these a sport, but they all share the same arguments 'for' as chess does...
I guess it really does share the same arguments 'for' as chess after all. 😛

Genius! 😵
Kasparov and Karpov both won "Sportsman of the Year..."
Topolov is a Bulgarian sportsman of the year.
Gligorich was sportsman of the year in Yugoslavia.
Jaan Ehlvest was the Estonian Sportsman of the year, twice!
Levon Aronian is an Armenian sportsman of the year.
Alonso Zapata was the Colombian Sportsman of the Year.
There are possibly more.
In 2000 Anand was named Sportsman of the Millennium by India!
1972 and did the Americans vote Fischer as Sportsman of the Year? No.
That year it was a tie between Billie Jean King (Tennis) and John Wooden (Basketball).
I think Chess is a game, but I'll accept it being called a sport.
It is most likely the same thing.
I've ever really cared.

For me, chess ticks all 3 boxes.
With regards to being a sport, well whoever said sport had to demand strictly physical attributes anyway? Sport is about mentality also, which is the key term with regards to chess, and so is classifiable as a sporting activity.
Who knows, maybe one day we will be able to watch the world chess championship matches on sky sports TV lol
