He's been on the radar for quite a while now. I think he's just stopped representing Iran (partly because he had to default every time he played an Israeli) so I'm sure a few other countries will be clamouring to sign him up.

I would not be surprised if Rex recruits him for the US and he moves to St. Louis.

I have this sneaking feeling that Firousja might just end Carlsens unbeaten streak. His energy and enthusiasm for the game is so impressive, you can see he genuinely feels he can mix it with anyone! 16 years old, whoo!! He will contest a WC match, 100%

It reminds me a bit of Carlsen in Nanjing 2009 when he got a 3001 performance. Magnus was 19 then though, and he'd already played a number of elite events by that point. If Alireza somehow wins this thing it will go down in history as the biggest debut into Elite chess, probably ever. Take Fischer/Kasparov/Carlsen at 16, none of them were even close to doing something like this.

@Duchess64
Yes i remember that. I think there are a few things that stopped Wei Yi really breaking through. His opening repertoire was very predictable until very recently. He won that brilliancy against Lazaro Bruzon Batista which was an amazing game! But he kept playing the same opening as white at every opportunity over the next couple of years. Given how well publicised that game was, it's not surprising people started preparing properly to play him. The same thing will happen to Firousja, for the moment he is a bit of an unknown. After this tournament ends we'll see how people adapt to him. Alireza seems far more versatile to me than Wei Yi though. He plays a wide range of openings.

Anyway, it'll be fun to watch! We need a new superstar, the Magnus Carlsen show is getting a bit repetitive now.

Botvinnik's alleged quote about the young Karpov:

The boy does not have a clue about chess, and there's no future at all for him in this profession.

Personally I rather doubt that he said this, it's just one of those "<insert famous chess player here> once said..." stories that can get copied and pasted into all the lousy chess potboilers.
