Try FICS. Yahoo, Pogo, and similar sites are not designed by chess players. Their flaws are the source of the frustrations that dominate discussions in these and other forums.
The ratings at these sites also appear grossly inflated. I've won every game I've played at Yahoo, and some of my opponents' ratings have been far higher than my FICS rating.

Engine cheating at yahoo and pogo IS a very big problem. Many players have openly admitted to me that they used engines, while others have tell tale signs in their play. It really doesn't bother me, as I accept it as part of playing at those sites. Since I don't put any credence into my ratings there (which regularly bounce between 1600 and 1950 on pogo), the cheats don't affect me nearly as much as they like to think that they do.
